This idea was Mireille’s brainchild, as she recently spotted the inspiration photo. And as I scroll through my social media, I am seeing black capri leggings everywhere. You may think there is no way a 60+ year old woman is wearing those, but as usual, it’s not all about the item, but how we can use it with what we own.
Quote of the day: “Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life.” Steve Jobs
Since most older women like me don’t Love strutting around in black capri leggings without other layers, I wanted to experiment with how we could layer them and use them to our advantage.
The inspiration photo was from an article touting the spring trends making the rounds this year.

Now make sure to visit Mireille’s blog post as she is playing with the same item, but I bet she styles them in different ways. Who knows? We didn’t plan what we were wearing together, so maybe we will have the same ideas.
Style tip: I did add a metallic belt to my “workout outfit” in a daily outfit post. See it on Monday. I may not wear that to the grocery store, but I did wear it to the gym and then removed the belt before class.
Here are my three ways to style black capri leggings that feel modern, intentional, and what I would consider completely fabulous.

This look is such a perfect example of borrowing a trend and making it work for us.
Instead of wearing capri leggings with a cropped top (which can feel a little too bare), pairing them with an oversized blazer (worn almost like a dress) gives you coverage and structure.
With this idea, you get that balance with the oversized blazer being counteracted by the fitted leggings.
I added heels to give it a little sexiness, because why can’t an older woman be a tad sexy?

Now this is how I love playing with layering.
Wearing black capri leggings under shorts is not only practical, but fun too.
And let’s talk about function for a second…because this is one of those outfits that lets you move, bend, sit, and not burn the backs of your legs on your car seats.
Styling tip: Choose shorts with a bit of structure or personality. That contrast is what keeps the outfit from feeling gym-like and instead makes it feel styled.

This might be my favorite because it’s such an easy way to extend your wardrobe.
Have a skirt that feels a little too short?
Instead of letting it sit in your closet, layer it over black capri leggings.
I would consider this one of the easiest ways to dip your toe into the trend without feeling overexposed.
Styling tip: Another fabulous idea if you have a “too short” skirt is to layer a longer skirt under it. No rule says you can only wear 1 skirt at a time.
Let’s address the elephant in the room.
Sure, this trend is worn by younger women.
But that doesn’t mean it’s off-limits for us.
What does matter is:
And that’s where layering becomes your best friend.
Layering, as I’ve shown, can give you the coverage you want and create interest in your look. It allows you to wear the fun items, but it still feels like you.
At our age, we realize that trends come and go. We’ve seen them all, and they keep coming back.
So at our mature age, we may not wear the same things in the same ways we used to…but that doesn’t mean we can’t wear them at all.
Let’s have fun finding different ways to wear clothes and create fun looks from what we have in our closets.
Stylist tip: I found a ton of this silhouette at the older women’s stores in the widget below, proving that my ideas are valid.
If you love black capri leggings, then I believe you should absolutely wear them.
Just style them in a way that feels good for you.
Or use these ideas for your black capri pants that aren’t leggings. The best thing about style and clothes is how you can change them up to make them work for your closet.
And make sure to check out how Mireille decided to style hers.
