Gold can have a reputation, right? Sometimes it feels glamorous, yet other times it can feel a little too much or even outdated.
That’s why I wanted to showcase colors to wear with gold that will light you up and make you look interesting.
Quote of the day: “Happiness is not something readymade. It comes from your own actions.” Dalai Lama
As I always say, it’s not the color that is causing you issues, it’s how you’re styling it. So let’s have fun and show how my crew is making gold feel friendly again.
My style crew and I decided to pair “metallic gold” (not mustard gold) with three different color directions:
Related post: We explored 4 popular colors to pair with gold last winter.
And we didn’t stop there. We’re also showcasing three different gold clothing items because variety is the spice of life.

Gold is one of those sneaky wardrobe heroes that people don’t always think of as a neutral, yet it absolutely is. Because it sits in that warm, glowing space between yellow, tan, and metallic, it blends beautifully with so many other colors without competing.
In fact, gold often acts like a bridge, tying different tones together that you originally thought didn’t go together.
Another reason I Love gold? It’s incredibly flattering on a wide range of skin tones. On deeper complexions, gold looks rich, radiant, and almost luminous.
For lighter complexions, it adds warmth and a healthy glow, which keeps outfits from feeling washed out.
And if it doesn’t look great with your complexion, then wear it on your bottom half.
Hopefully, the 3 of us prove that gold is NOT a “special occasion only” color. No matter what colors you want to wear with it.

Cathie’s look: Gold top + neutrals
If you’ve ever thought, “I love gold, but I don’t want to look flashy,” this is your answer.
Cathie styled a gold top with a breezy white skirt that keeps everything feeling light and grounded. The gold becomes the star, but it’s not overwhelming because you have other elements that play a supporting role.
And then…that pop of colors with the sneakers and purse?? Brilliant.
Stylist tip: Neutrals (like white, cream, beige, denim, or even soft gray) act as a buffer for gold. If you think gold is too “out there” for everyday, then these will help tone it down.

Details:
-Cathie chose gold jewelry against her gold top, BUT silver or bronze would have worked also. Remember, it’s very modern to mix your metals nowadays.
-I love how the red purse and sneakers liven up the look.

Charlotte’s look: Bright colors + gold accessories
Now let’s flip the script.
Instead of gold being the main character, Charlotte uses it as the supporting actress, as those fabulous accessories for the look.
She paired this bright, jewel-toned shirtdress with a column of white and tons of metallic gold accessories.
This is such an easy way to dip your toe into gold if you’re not ready for full-on gold clothing.

Details:
-Charlotte has worn this gem colored shirt dress many ways lately (the last time layered under a white lace blazer). It’s your sign to find a shirtdress that speaks to you.
-Her other fabulous item that sparks joy is these glitter sneakers. They give you that comfort and yet look fantastic.
-The hat and purse next to each other show a great lesson…not all metallic gold is the same shade/value…just like ANY other color, there are different variations in a “color.”

Jodie’s look: Gold skirt + pastels
Pastels are another “color” that tends to get a bad wrap, especially for us older women. That’s why I added pastels to our challenge of pairing colors to wear with gold.
I paired a gold skirt with a pink and yellow sweater, along with cowboy boots. The dichotomy makes it interesting and doesn’t let your brain concentrate on the one gold item, in case you still feel overwhelmed by metallic gold clothing.
Gold can sometimes feel “heavy,” but I like to think that the pastels lighten it up beautifully.

Details:
-I knit this sweater ages ago. There wasn’t enough of the front color to complete the entire sweater, so you can see how I “added to” for the back half.
–This feather pin/clip in my hair has been such a favorite of mine. So much so that I ordered another one, so I have 2.
-Notice the “bows” on my cowboy boots. These are small scarves that I made from leftover material.
-And yes, I used a flower brooch to hold up my sweater a bit on the side…it didn’t stay up the way I intended, but it’s like me: perfectly imperfect.

If you’ve ever felt unsure about wearing gold, here’s what I want you to remember:
Gold isn’t “too much.” It just needs the right partner.
In reality, metallics are super versatile because they really go with anything and everything. That’s why we have talked about metallics in the past:
–How to wear metallic shoes
–Burgundy and metallics
–Metallics and aqua
Stylist tip: Don’t forget it is fabulous to mix gold and silver…all metals go together wonderfully, as we have shown back in the day.
