Some of our clothing items seem better suited to warm temperatures. I think culottes have that characteristic. Because I believe that it’s never just about one clothing item…but what you pair with it, I want to make a case that you can wear these culottes even in winter. Thus, the combination of culottes with boots works beautifully at any age and with all types of boots.
Quote of the day: “You say ‘amateur’ as if it were a dirty word. ‘Amateur’ comes from the Latin word ‘amare’, which means to Love. To do things for the love of it.” Mozart in the Jungle
My crew showcases four very different boot styles, with various culottes. In my opinion, culottes are far more versatile than they are given credit. They basically look like a skirt, but feel like pants.
And with the idea that culottes are flowy and usually hit mid calf, now you can show off your fabulous winter footwear…boots. Without planning it, my crew wore various types of boots to give you a boatload of options.
We have styled culottes previously in the fall season, if you want more ideas:
–Culottes and ankle boots
–Tucked vs untucked with culottes
–Flowy and flowy together
Before we get into the individual looks, let’s talk about why this combo works so well.
Culottes already bring structure and movement. Boots add weight and visual balance. Together, they create outfits that feel functionally styled.
A few reasons I love culottes with boots:
Style-wise we are seeing more volume in the bottom half. We are witnessing wide-leg pants and wrap pants right now, so it only makes sense to start wearing your culottes, which have that same silhouette.
And most importantly? They’re comfortable. Real-life comfortable. The kind of comfort that lets you walk, stand, sit, laugh, and live your day.

Charlotte is wearing denim culottes paired with tall boots. This is such a classic-meets-modern combination.
If you love jeans but want something a little different, this could be an option you might not have thought of. I believe denim culottes can be your “grown-up cool” alternative to straight-leg jeans.
There are a bunch of them in the shopping widget above, which shows that maybe they are “on-trend.”

Details:
-My mom has worn this sweater vest with a white shirt under it and brown pants in the past.
-Her shirt under the vest is a combination of a Halftee turtleneck under a brown long cardigan, worn buttoned so you think it’s a top.
-The turquoise purse makes it fabulously modern instead of choosing a brown bag, which could be too matchy-matchy, creating a dated look.

Leslie is wearing navy pleated culottes with ankle boots, and this outfit is such a great example of softness meeting structure.
Pleats add movement. The Navy acts as a neutral. Ankle boots keep the look grounded and wearable. And Leslie went with a Western vibe for the look.
We’ve seen her wear these culottes in a vintage way before.
But today, she let her SW cowgirl show through and styled them with cowboy ankle booties and a Western hat.

Details:
-Leslie only wore ankle booties today because of her ankle/foot issue, which had her in a walking boot for a month. But I’m glad she did, because they show a fabulous option.
-She bookended the boots with the tan hat and even added a tan purse.
-I love the red vest over the blue striped blouse. It’s very Americana without trying to be.

I’m wearing black culottes with mid-calf boots, and this pairing is often misunderstood. Mid-calf boots often receive a bad rap because old-time stylists claim they cut off the leg line. While I always counter that looking good does not depend on looking taller, my other point is that you’d never know these boots stop right at my mid calf since the culottes cover them.
I added a bunch of sparkle with my top and headband, and then loads of extras with my bag charms and accessories.

Details:
-First, this purse was made from a sail (as in sailboat) with the grommets and straps…it’s super cool, and Suzann (who has joined us on the blog) gifted it to me. The upcycling idea is incredible.
-My top is very flowy, so I made a video on how to “ruche” it in with a brooch. BTW, I find some of the coolest brooches on Etsy.
-I’ve had these earrings for over 20 years. I spent a lot on them back in the day, and while I couldn’t find the exact ones anymore, the brand is on Poshmark.

Valerie brings an edgy vibe to the idea of culottes with boots, and I love it.
She’s wearing pleated black culottes, which could easily be considered “dressy.”
But she created a dichotomy with her look by adding the combat boots.
For those of you who still think that combat boots are only for young girls…think again. They add an “interesting” edge to any look, as well as the fact that they are flat and very comfy.
Heck, no one will call you old-fashioned wearing them.

Details:
-Valerie found these amazing combat boots at DSW. The floral print is subtle but super cool. Notice the fishnet stockings too…talk about a perfect example of dichotomy.
-I love this as a great example that we can wear crochet in the winter. Sure, it’s warmer here in AZ, but Valerie could have layered it over a turtleneck if needed. It still adds amazing texture.
-Valerie’s showing her signature styling detail of a scarf hanging over her shoulder. It’s kept in place this time by tying it around the vest’s shoulder since the vest is lightweight.

Do culottes make me look shorter? I like to think that it doesn’t matter how tall or short you look. Take the Stress off getting dressed by having fun with your style. And don’t forget to take a selfie…you get a better perspective on how the outfit looks that way.
Are culottes “in-style”? While these aren’t something I’m seeing on all the younger girls, I think the most important aspect of getting dressed is feeling good in what you wear. Not chasing the trends. If you want to seem more modern, make sure your top half and footwear are more contemporary.
Can petite women wear culottes with boots? Absolutely. All four of us are under 5’4″ tall.
Are culottes age-appropriate? Style has no age limit. Culottes are about confidence and comfort. And both of which get better with time.

Culottes with boots aren’t about rules. As I talk about all the time, style is way more fun when you prioritize playfulness and try new things.
Try tall boots. Pull out your ankle boots. I dare you to style a pair of combat boots. Try mid-calf boots. Let the mirror, not outdated fashion advice, guide you.
Each of us looks different, and that’s a good thing. Because every outfit tells a different story. And every single one is wonderful in its own right.
So if you’ve been hesitating to wear culottes, consider this your nudge. Pull them out. Add boots. Walk out the door like you mean it.
Insider tip: Many times, you can “create” a pair of culottes from pants that seem too short or are too long. And if you can’t do it yourself, take it to a seamstress.
Unique and fabulous style doesn’t come from playing it safe. If you always dress “safe,” you’re bound to blend in and become invisible. Instead, I suggest trusting yourself and giving new things a try.
