I want to share some news. I’ve joined the Silicon Valley Business Journal as digital managing editor, as of December 15.
Some readers may know I worked at the Business Journal years ago, in the pre-iPhone era. A lot has changed since then. The newsroom is different. The publication is digital first now.
And I’m different. I’ve spent the past few decades reporting and editing across the Bay Area and beyond, covering startups, Technology, venture capital, AI and other business stories.
In recent years, I built this Substack newsletter and created two podcasts as an independent journalist. I’ve also trained founders and investors on how to tell their stories and worked with startups and investors on communications, events and pitch materials.
All those experiences have reshaped how I think about local business journalism and why I’m excited about this role.
Strong local reporting gives communities context. It helps leaders make better decisions. It explains not just what is happening, but why it matters.
Silicon Valley holds a special place for me. I have lived and worked in San Jose, graduated from San Jose State University and spent years writing about this area. The South Bay continues to drive a huge share of the region’s economic engine.
AI companies are taking up office space again. SJSU’s economic impact is significant. San Jose ranks among the top cities globally for per-capita GDP. Founders are still starting companies. Downtown is drawing visitors to the city. Venture continues to move Money and talent through Santa Clara and San Mateo counties. Global events like Super Bowl LX, March Madness and the World Cup will arrive in 2026.
There is no shortage of Silicon Valley business stories to report, from commercial Real Estate and restaurants to technology and Finance.
I’m grateful to join a strong team of reporters and editors who care deeply about the local community and the work of journalism. My role will focus on supporting the newsroom, shaping digital coverage and helping bring urgency and Clarity to the daily news.
Across the Business Journals network, our newsrooms are Investing in tools that help reporters work faster and smarter. And AI is very much part of that effort. I look forward to learning from other markets and advancing those ideas back to Silicon Valley.
A quick note on my independent work. As I transition back into the newsroom, I’ll be winding down my independent publishing to focus on my role at the Business Journal.
I also have a few remaining episodes of The Venture Variety Show that will run over the next several weeks. After that, the podcast will pause so I can fully focus on the SVBJ.
However, I’m exploring an SVBJ-focused podcast for next year. If you want to talk about sponsorship ideas, reach out.
Working independently connected me with founders, investors and operators who care deeply about how technology and capital shape this region. Those conversations helped prepare me for this return to the newsroom.
Business journalism is people journalism. Every shift in technology, venture or workforce strategy reflects decisions made by people and affects the people building and funding companies across the South Bay.
I look forward to helping tell those stories and working with my new teammates to track where Silicon Valley is heading next.
If you are building something new or see a shift worth watching in the year ahead, I want to hear from you. You can reach me at [email protected].
