Walker Ordering Tips: Measurements and Specifications
In this video, Cindy provides essential tips on ordering walkers, including crucial measurements to collect and important things to consider before making a purchase.
Specifications to Check When Ordering a Walker
(1) Handle Height is Key: Check handle height and/or individual height recommendations for the user, with handle height being the most important. – How to Measure: To check for the user’s appropriate handle height, have them stand fully upright with arms relaxed at their sides. Measure from the floor to the wrist level, which is where the handle height should hit.
– Height Limits: Remember, if they are close to the short end of the limits, you may want to look at junior walker specs. If close to the tall end limits, check the specifications on "tall" walkers.
(2) Adult Walker Height with Wheels: An adult walker may be too tall with wheels added (adding approximately 1.5 – 2 inches of height). If the user falls into the 5′ 1"- 5′ 3" height range, they may need a junior walker.
(3) Tall Users: May need leg extensions or a "tall" walker if they fall in the upper height ranges (some standard walkers may only adjust to accommodate up to 5′ 10" to 5′ 11").
(4) Wheels: Recommend 5-inch wheels over 3-inch wheels for easier maneuvering.
(5) Walker Width: Check the walker width against doorways and for individual use needing to step slightly into the walker.
(6) Weight Limit: Check the weight limit of the walker. If the user is over the limit, look at a bariatric walker.
(7) Walker Weight: Consider the overall weight of the walker for transport and use.
(8) Rollator Seat Height: On a rollator walker, check the seat height. For safety, the height should be approximately mid-thigh or just slightly higher to improve safety when sitting down and avoid the need to come up onto the toes to reach the seat.
