Bedroom: BED – In and Out 1 with Bed Transfer Aids

In this video, caregivers will learn how to assist individuals when getting in/out of bed using a bedrail and a step stool for assistance. The goal is to keep the individual safe, but allow them to do as much as possible, giving verbal cues and assistance as needed.

Bedrail in Place/Foot Stool in Place as Needed

Verbal Cues for Getting Into Bed

1. Back up to the step stool
2. Step up with the strong leg first, then the weaker leg
3. Take hold of the bedrail, placing the opposite hand on the bed
4. Sit down on the bed
5. Firm your stomach as you lie down to protect
your back
6. Lie down onto your side, coming down onto your elbow as you bring your feet up onto the bed (assist with legs as needed)
7. Caregivers should use caution with the stepstool. To protect your back, place a foot on the stool, if stable, as needed to get closer to the client.
8. Keeping your knees bent, roll onto your back (Having them log roll, not twisting at the waist)

Verbal Cues for Getting Out of Bed

1. Bend your knees up, putting your feet on the bed
2. Firm your stomach, reach with your top hand over and grab the bedrail
3. Log roll onto your side, placing your top hand on the bed
4. Push up with your elbow that is against the bed and down on the bedrail with the top hand as you bring your legs off the bed, coming up into sitting (assist with legs as needed)
5. Caregivers should use caution with the stepstool. To protect your back, place a foot on the stool, if stable, as needed to get closer to the client.
6. When coming down off the step stool, come down with the weaker leg first.
