I realize that Google categorizes my site as fashion-related. But I’m not just a one-trick pony. Fashion encompasses our bodies, and thus, I Love sharing the Lifestyle pieces that make our days brighter, healthier, and more enjoyable. Today’s topic is all about homemade acai smoothie bowls.
Quote of the day: “Three ways to learn something new:
1-Reflect on what you have already tried.
2-Attempt something you have not tried.
3-Read about what someone else has tried.” James Clear
My theory is that if you start the day out on the right foot, you have a better chance of staying on track.
It’s why I’ve shared other breakfast ideas like:
–Smoothies
–Chia pudding bowls
–2 Gluten free breakfast options
This all started when Rob and I discovered Nekter Juice Bar as an alternative to ice cream. They were delicious but definitely not cheap. And once I started understanding glucose spikes, I realized Nekter was mainly fruit.
Insider tip: This book made a huge impression on me, and she illustrates glucose spikes with easy-to-understand charts. She also shares 10 tricks about eating…not that you can’t eat sugar, but how to help your body manage it better.
So I took a stab at making our own homemade acai smoothie bowls to save Money and make sure they were super healthy.
There have been some failures along the way, but with practice, we’ve finally gotten it down, so I thought I’d share it with you.
You could say that I’ve “Jodified” the idea. Because while the Nekter option was the original, we wanted it as nutritious as possible AND to work as a breakfast option…not just dessert.
My emails are my way to share fun and positive content with you from all of the sites I visit during the week. Sure, you also get my free eBook when you sign up, but that’s not the best part.
The best part is you get a daily dose of positive energy.

Here’s where I failed when I first started this journey. I originally bought acai powder, and that doesn’t work. I’m sure you can use acai powder in many things, but not for these homemade acai smoothie bowls if you expect them to come out thick and wonderful.
Instead, I buy acai packets (in the frozen section) at Trader Joe’s. If you’ve seen our Grocery Haul videos, you might recognize these packets (showcased at the 6 minute mark).
They are available elsewhere, but make sure there is no added sugars.
But here’s where I veer from the standard acai smoothie bowl crowd: I sneak in vegetables. We try to give our acai smoothie bowls as much fiber and nutrients as possible.
Insider detail: In Nekter’s defense, they did have 1 option that added spinach to it, but that was the only veggie.
There are many veggies that can easily “hide” in our acai smoothie bowls because acai has a robust flavor profile. If you ask Google, it will say it tastes like a blend of chocolate and berries.
So here are just a couple of veggies that we add to the blender:
We don’t always add all of these. It just depends on what we have in the refrigerator at the time.
When you blend it all together, you truly can’t taste the vegetables, but you get the benefit of the extra fiber and nutrients.
We do add 1 extra fruit to the blender. If Rob is making it, it’s a banana. If I’m making it, then I usually add blueberries. But we try to only add 1 extra fruit to keep our glucose spike minimal.

The drawback of Nekter’s acai smoothie bowls is that they are full of fruit. Healthy, sure, but a source of glucose spikes.
One thing that I’ve learned is that acai has no natural sugars in it. That’s why Nekter adds “sweet-tasting” fruit to it.
Thus, the addition of the veggies to our acai smoothie bowls, but I don’t stop there. As a menopausal woman, I’ve learned how important protein is in each meal, which leads me to the next essential ingredient.
Protein powder.
There was a time when I snubbed protein powders because I wanted “real” food. But I’ve come to the point where sometimes, convenience can be helpful.
Insider tip: Protein powders can be full of extra unwanted ingredients, so make sure to check the ingredient labels.
While we alternate between many food items, we have been using this protein powder for over 4 years now. Every time we look for less expensive ones, we get overwhelmed with the unwanted ingredients.
XOJacqui only has 6 ingredients. Yes, monkfruit is one of them, but we like it better than stevia (the flavor of stevia is not one that we like).
We have gotten to the point of adding a scoop of vanilla and a scoop of chocolate protein powder to the blender. This helps balance out the carbs, keeps us full until lunchtime, and makes it a powerhouse meal.
I also like using BOTH the vanilla and the chocolate together because they have different nutrient profiles, so we get a variety.
For liquid, I use coconut milk (unsweetened). But you could also use almond milk or maybe no milk if you want your acai smoothie bowl thicker.
Insider tip: If thicker is your goal, also consider adding frozen veggies or berries. Or even ice.

Once the base is blended and poured into bowls, it’s time to add the extras. I like to think of toppings as the “jewelry” of your smoothie bowl. They add texture, flavor, and a little sparkle to what’s underneath.
But don’t just think we decorate our acai smoothie bowls to look good. We are adding things to make it even more nutritious.
Here are some of our favorites:
When it all comes together, you get something that feels indulgent but is actually nourishing.

For us, homemade acai smoothie bowls are more than just a pretty breakfast. They’ve really become a staple once we’ve learned how to make them nutritious and delicious.
Why? Because:
If you’re new to making acai smoothie bowls at home, here are a few tricks we’ve learned:
The most important point is, are you giving your body the ingredients that it needs to function? I only wish that instead of counting calories when growing up, we had learned to count nutrients.
If you haven’t tried making your own acai smoothie bowls at home, I can’t recommend it enough. Not only do they make breakfast feel like a treat, but they’re also a fantastic way to sneak in veggies, protein, and healthy fats without feeling deprived.
The amazing part is how it keeps us full until lunchtime. I used to believe in healthy snacking, but I’ve come to learn that 3 squares a day is better for us.
These are the perfect summer breakfast because they are cold, refreshing, and nourishing. Sure, it takes a little more time than protein powder and milk in your smoothie, but you’re giving your body the fuel it needs.
And yes, you can be the boss of your acai smoothing bowls. There are no rules. Make your bowl your own and start the day off right.
