How to Wear Activewear Skirts Beyond Workouts

You know me, I’m always looking for ways to get more wear out of the things in our closets. Just because something is labeled “athletic” or “activewear” doesn’t mean it can’t join the rest of your everyday wardrobe. I came upon this idea with activewear skirts when I showed a dressier outfit with one of my corsets earlier this year that included this skirt.

Quote of the day: “The key is not to prioritize what’s on your schedule, but to schedule your priorities.” Stephen Covey

If you ask the younger generation, these activewear skirts are usually styled with tank tops, sneakers, and a protein smoothie in hand.

But because we are the boss of our clothes, we can elevate these sporty bottoms into something a little more everyday fabulous. It’s one of my mottos that we have to stop categorizing our clothes. That means stop categorizing them into dressy, casual, work appropriate, girly, or any of the other descriptive terms we use.

Mireille and I styled our activewear skirts for a summer day out, and no, we weren’t heading to the gym. We were out enjoying Scottsdale, looking stylish, and staying cool in the process.

Insider tip: Mireille is also showing another activewear skirt outfit on her site. It’s a skort that I found when we were thrifting, and since I already had 2 other blue ones, I gave it to her.

What Are Activewear Skirts?

In case you’re new to the world of skorts or performance skirts, these are typically made of stretchy, breathable, moisture-wicking materials with built-in shorts underneath. But then again, as long as they are knit or material that moves and grooves, it’s all good to call them what you like.

These clothing pieces have often been relegated to workout wear, golf courses, or casual errands. But we are here to change that perspective.

Because, even though the material may say activewear, that doesn’t mean it can’t be dressed up.

Heck, we’ve dressed up many things before on this site, including:
T-shirt dress
Sneakers
Sweatshirts–when I made mine into a skirt

Our Looks:

I had to giggle when I looked at these photos and realized how similar our tops were, and we hadn’t planned it.
Yes, we both wore floral tiered tops in a warm pink/red colorway.

Honestly, it wasn’t planned. We just inspire each other and think in the same ways when “dressing up” a clothing item.
And neither one of us looked like we were heading to play tennis. I bet no one could tell that we were wearing activewear skirts.

Mireille

Mireille is showing a very similar top in the fact that it’s a warm colored floral print with tiers, yet it creates a very different look.

Insider tip: Either of us could have tucked in the lower tier of the top to make it shorter. You are the boss of your clothes, and even though it has tiers, it doesn’t mean you can’t treat it like a non-tiered top.

Her activewear skirt is a hi-low variety that is knit material with no shorts under it. Yet I’d consider it activewear because of the material and shape.
It’s sold by the Halftee company and marketed as an “everyday skirt” and comes in a ton of different colors (this color is called teal). Use code Jtouch20 for a discount.

Details:

-There’s a tad bit of turquoise green in Mireille’s top, so it seems intentional to wear the teal skirt with it.
-Even though the sandals are not the same shade as the skirt, they blend in perfectly, especially with the addition of her accessories.
-And don’t you Love the addition of another print with her purse? That’s pure sass.

Jodie

I love the a-line silhouette with activewear skirts because even if they are short, they seem to have more coverage, especially when you sit down.

Pairing an off-the-shoulder top with it creates different proportions than if I had pulled it up over my shoulders. Sometimes when we leave our tops untucked, it can make a top seem too long, so making it OTS uses skin as a style trick.
Granted, you can’t do this with every top…this one has elastic and thus is easy to pull down my shoulders, but some stretchy materials can be worn this way.

Details:

-I love the idea of accessorizing your purse with a necklace. Wanna see how I did it? Here’s the video.
-With OTS tops, I tend to wear longer earrings. These shoulder-scraping earrings were made by my friend, Judy.
-You’d be surprised at how these shoes are comfy enough for walking around (as long as you have strong ankles). The platform makes the incline shallow, and the fabric is smooth around your feet. While the style is from last year, they are still being sold (and I would buy them again).

Can You Style Activewear Skirts Beyond the Gym?

It’s a rhetorical question since that’s how we are showcasing them for this article. Obviously, you can wear anything you want, but it’s easy to dress up these skirts.
Both Mireille and I incorporated the same ideas with our activewear skirt outfits, so I broke it down into 5 ideas.

Pair It With a Statement Top-Bring on the fun tops and leave the t-shirts at home.

Choose Bold Colors-Skip the basic black or gray if you can. Bring in some color, whether with the skirt or the top half.

Upgrade Your Shoes-Sneakers aren’t the only option! Especially in summer, pull out the fun and chic sandals.

Add Accessories-Don’t forget all the extras that make all the difference. Even when it’s hot, there are ways to accessorize and still stay cool.

Own It With Confidence-The key is to treat the activewear skirt like any other skirt. If you believe it can be styled up, you’ll naturally reach for more interesting pairings and accessories. It’s all about your mindset that style isn’t dictated by our categories.

Why You Might Love Activewear Skirts Or Not

Let’s be honest: sometimes we just want to be comfortable. These skirts deliver depending on your definition of comfortable.

What I love most is that they’re versatile. An activewear skirt gives you coverage, freedom of movement, and a lightweight, breathable feel.

And the best part? They come in all sizes, shapes, and lengths, so there is one for everybody.

There is a drawback to the usual activewear skirts. Having shorts as part of their construction means you have to pull them down for bathroom breaks. If you’re out hiking, this can be a disadvantage as opposed to a skirt skirt. Luckily, there are casual skirts that work wonderfully, like Mireille’s.

Where to Find the Good Ones

If you’re ready to try one for yourself, here are some of our favorite places to shop for activewear skirts:

  • Athleta – Higher price point but excellent quality, although the lengths tend to be shorter.
  • Land’s End– Budget-friendly as they are always having sales, and they’ve been adding more fashion-forward prints.
  • Amazon – Tons of variety and easy to compare styles.
  • Halaras – With even longer versions and hi-low versions.

You can find types with pockets, longer lengths, or fun patterns to suit your personality. Remember, they may look short on the model, but I bet the model is really tall…check the measurements before eliminating it from your options.

I also find most of mine when thrifting, so if you’re open to secondhand, it’s a good place to shop.

Insider tip: Once you discover pockets in the shorts under the skirt, it’s a game changer for storing your phone when out walking.

My emails are my way to share fun and positive content with you from all of the sites I visit during the week. Sure, you also get my free eBook when you sign up, but that’s not the best part.
The best part is you get a daily dose of positive energy.

Function & Fashion

Activewear skirts aren’t just for working out anymore. They’ve become part of our real-world wardrobes, and that’s a good thing.

Just like we learned to love sneakers with dresses, it’s time to embrace the activewear skirt as a chic, wearable option for everyday life.

Remember, Mireille has a different outfit on her site to give you more inspiration.

So next time you see one in your drawer, don’t think, “that’s just for casual or the gym.”
Think instead: “How can I make this fabulous?”
