Dr. Thomas provides readers with a rare and factually grounded portrait of Edgar Allan Poe, correcting centuries of misinformation and mythmaking that began almost immediately after Poe’s death in 1849. The book explores Poe’s final days and his relationship with Dr. John Moran, who attended Poe at the time of his death, providing new insight into a long-misunderstood figure in American literary history.

Dr. Thomas is a lifetime member of the Modern Language Association and was the keynote speaker at the 2009 Poe Studies Association Bicentennial Convention. In this conversation, we dig into literary history, Poe’s Legacy, and the detective work behind reconstructing truth from fiction.
