Attract the Right Job or Clientele:
Team Sports Can Model Better Business Actions
One cannot ignore the remarkable comeback of the Commander’s football team. Although not an avid sports enthusiast, I pay attention to some outstanding efforts and how they relate to business or anything we want to achieve.
Over the past few years, the team has undergone significant changes, from changing its name to changing ownership and, finally, coaches. No one can predict whether this investment will pay off or the outcome, but taking a calculated risk to move forward is critical for sports and business, and it appears the team is on the right track. Accordingly, our blog offers insights on how team sports can model better business actions.

Luck Empowers Winning
The end of a recent game was almost jaw-dropping and referred to the strategy as a ‘Hail Mary!’ The Commanders were losing a recent game. Seemingly, out of the blue, with only a brief time left, a player on the field ran backward from the opposing team and threw the ball as high and hard as he could toward the field goal. Stunningly, a teammate stood at the right place at the right time to catch it, and together, they helped their team win the game!
Business Luck
Occasionally, we surprise ourselves being in business to attract incredible opportunities or clients that we initially didn’t believe possible. But is the luck real? Business requires more hours than we care to admit for learning, trying, retrying, and finally coming upon and implementing strategies that work.
Many don’t realize that others are watching our behaviors and strategies to potentially mirror or, at the very least, inquire about a collaborative effort. The more critical elements are observing our communications, delivery, and follow-up to ensure our clientele are beyond being satisfied working with us. Being faithfully watched as if we were members of a sports team attracts offers that we never saw coming.
But Is It Luck or Dedication?
The answer could be ‘a bit of both.’ The continual effort to do our best and learn from the errors makes us wiser. Moreover, those impressed by what we do inquire if we will entertain taking them on as team players for a more robust output. Like a sports team, the collaborative effort typically earns exponential results, benefitting all participating.
Network Building
An excellent team player seeks out others who share similar business values and goals and are willing to help one another grow on multiple levels. Over time, varying introductions are made voluntarily, often leading to new opportunities.
Social Media
Posting our insights for the benefit of others attracts a loyal audience. But know that it’s never a one-way street. It’s wise to check what our admirers are posting to help share their news, too. Over time, we build a more robust audience and opportunities.
Even better is when a platform like LinkedIn suggests the names of people with whom to connect. Again, messaging and relaying what caught your interest in their work brings an element of commonality and reason to a conversation. Soon, new opportunities arise once again.
Conclusion: Team Sports Can Model Better Business Actions
Occasionally, it may seem as if we, too, are experiencing a ‘Hail Mary Game Play.’ Still, consistency and dedication to our work are our differentiators for success. We, too, have our practice fields and must take advantage of them to achieve our goals. All in all, team sports can model better business actions.
