She qualified as an occupational therapist from the University of Ulster, undertook her MSc in Rehabilitation from the University of Southampton and her PhD at the University of Nottingham.Accomplishments:Fellow of the College of Occupational TherapistsPrevious Chair of the UK Stroke Forum- a coalition of 32 national multi-disciplinary organizations involved in stroke from across the UK committed to improving care for people after strokePrevious Board Member, Derby Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation TrustMember of the RCP Intercollegiate Working Party for strokeDeputy Chair HEE/NIHR ICA, Clinical Lectureship and Senior Clinical Lectureship Panel.Editor in Chief of Clinical Rehabilitation.Although Avril's main areas of interest are stroke rehabilitation and conducting randomized controlled trials, she is interested in all aspects of rehabilitation research. She has conducted trials and service evaluations of stroke units, occupational Therapy pre-discharge home visits, falls reduction/management, interventions for people with MS, traumatic brain injury, low back pain and total hip replacements. She was one of fifteen woman identified by World Stroke Academy as an International Women in Stroke in 2021.Avril is currently conducting research into fatigue after stroke, which we discussed in this interview. Co-Hosts Profiles:
David Dansereau is a stroke survivor and the founder of Know-Stroke.org - a community for patients with stroke and PFO. His story was featured in the NY Times.
A licensed physical therapist, nutritionist, and clinical PT consultant, David has a keen interest to explore the intersection of stroke rehabilitation and digital therapeutics to expand the reach of post stroke therapy and improve patient outcomes. He is a CAPS (Certified Aging in Place) certified specialist and is the founder of SmartMovesPT a digital health and rehab tech consulting company based in Rhode Island.
David is also an Amazon best selling author with the publication of his preventive medicine book, Body in Balance.
Michael Garrow grew up as a caregiver for his mother who had a stroke at age 28. He earned his graduate degree from Griffith College Dublin and spent the early stage of his career in Dublin, Ireland working in the health tech space as a market research analyst and then moving into a wellness start-up. Michael currently resides in NYC working as a Senior Digital Product Manger with CVS Health.
