Tip #6 for Staying Focused and on Track to Achieving Your Goals

  1. Tip #6 for Staying Focused and on Track to Achieving Your Goals Anne Bachrach 2:00

Today we are talking about Tip #6 for Staying Focused and on Track to Achieving Your Goals, which is to Create a Time Blocked Schedule.

Create time blocks in your workday where you focus on a single task or a chunk of like-tasks. During that block of time, nothing else gets your attention, except the task or tasks in front of you. Remove all other distractions by clearing your desk, turning off your phone, closing email, etc. At the end of the time block (30 minutes, 1 hour, 2, 3 or 4 hours) whatever was on your calendar is now finished. Let it go and move on to the next scheduled task.

Some people can work in 4-hour time blocks; however, most people are better at working in 60–90-minute time blocks. Essentially there should be no white space in your calendar, so you don’t have to think about what you should do next. If your calendar could talk, it would tell you what to do and when to do it, and you would just say, OK, Thanks calendar. I recommend you use 15-minute increments in your calendar because some activities only take a few minutes, and you don’t want the calendar to not look organized and easy to read.

Brian Tracy talks wrote a book called Eat That Frog. “Eat that frog!” means to start your day with the biggest, most important, and most dreaded task. It's also the task you are most likely to procrastinate on. Brian Tracy is also about disciplining yourself to eat that frog first thing in the morning every single day.
