Gilby Clarke: I Had ONE WEEK to Learn 50 Guns N’ Roses Songs

From playing in small Hollywood clubs to stepping into one of the biggest rock bands on the planet, Gilby Clarke’s story is one of determination, talent, timing and an unwavering Love of rock and roll.

In this episode of A Breath of Fresh Air, Sandy Kaye sits down with legendary guitarist, singer, songwriter and producer Gilby Clarke for an intimate conversation about the career that took him from the Sunset Strip to sold-out stadiums around the world.

Long before joining Guns N’ Roses, Gilby was chasing his dream in Los Angeles with bands including Candy and Kill for Thrills, where he played alongside Jason Nesmith, son of Monkees legend Mike Nesmith. Growing up in Cleveland, inspired by bands like Led Zeppelin, Kiss, Aerosmith and Alice Cooper, Gilby taught himself guitar after saving every dollar he could to buy his first instrument, setting him on a path that would eventually change his life forever.

That life-changing moment came in 1991 when original Guns N’ Roses guitarist Izzy Stradlin left the band during the mammoth Use Your Illusion world tour. Gilby reveals how an unexpected phone call from Slash changed everything. With just one week to learn 50 songs, he suddenly found himself performing alongside Axl Rose, Slash, Duff McKagan and Matt Sorum before audiences of up to 80,000 people a night.

In this candid interview, Gilby explains why joining Guns N’ Roses wasn’t about fame—it was about proving he belonged. He shares the pressure of replacing a founding member, why he was determined not to let Slash down, and why becoming part of one of the biggest bands in the world was simply the fulfilment of everything he’d dreamed about as a young guitarist.

He also speaks openly about the end of his time with Guns N’ Roses, admitting that even today he still doesn’t fully know why his chapter with the band came to an end. Rather than dwelling on disappointment, Gilby reveals how he immediately channelled his energy into his solo career, working once again with Slash on Slash’s Snakepit before forging a successful path as a solo artist, producer and one of rock’s most sought-after session musicians.

Along the way, Gilby has worked with an extraordinary range of artists, from Nancy Sinatra, Heart, MC5, Rock Star Supernova and Tommy Lee, to stepping in for Alice Cooper’s band with only two days’ notice to learn 30 songs before heading out on a six-week tour. His attitude? Confidence, preparation and never showing fear are just part of being a rock guitarist.

Gilby also reflects on the friendships that shaped his career, the close-knit Los Angeles music scene that produced Guns N’ Roses, and why he believes success comes from wanting it "more than the guy next to you." It’s an honest, inspiring conversation filled with behind-the-scenes stories that fans rarely get to hear.

Today, Gilby continues to tour the world with the all-star supergroup Kings of Chaos, sharing the stage with some of rock’s biggest names, including Billy Gibbons, Robin Zander, Matt Sorum and many more. He explains why, after more than four decades in the music business, he’s still living the dream he set out to achieve as a teenager.

Hello, I’m Sandy Kaye. A freelance broadcaster, journalist and producer who has spent more than 35 years on both sides of radio and television microphones. I’ve worked with every TV network in Australia, have produced and presented for countless radio stations around the country and have hosted my own commercial radio talk-back show. I’ve even held the distinction of being Sydney’s first female newsreader on radio – way back when!

Today my passion is A Breath of Fresh Air which allows me to immerse myself in one of my favourite things – music. I just love all kinds of music and am fascinated by the people who make it. In particular, it’s the music of the '60s '70s and '80s that takes me back to my youth and means so much to me.

As a journalist, I’m all about digging deep into the classic hits of our time.
I bring you intimate, warm, fireside chats with the artists who tell us about their lives both then and now.
We learn about what makes them tick, who they are in their professional and private lives and how they went about making the soundtrack to our lives.

'A Breath of Fresh Air’ is exceptional - exceptional not because of me, but rather because of the stories that some of the best-known musical artists choose to share with me.

I created this podcast to honour them. It’s all about THEIR lives, THEIR stories, THEIR music, told now, in THEIR voices, before they’re lost forever.

I see my podcast as a personal labour of love, but also as an archival legacy for music fans and practitioners alike, both current and future, who otherwise might never know of the amazing people who helped build the industry.

I really hope you enjoy each and every episode of A Breath of Fresh Air.
