The last few weeks of summer are slipping away, and for school leaders, the countdown clock is ticking louder by the day. While some staff are still savoring the final days of break, leaders should already be setting the stage for a powerful, focused return — one that starts with Clarity.

Over the past two months, I’ve had the opportunity to work alongside leadership teams across the country, diving deep into the work of creating real clarity. Not vague mission statements. Not buzzwords. But clarity that lives in how we communicate, how we lead, and how our people experience the culture every day.

And here’s what I’ve learned again and again:

The leaders who make the greatest impact don’t wait for staff to return before they start leading.
They’re already setting the tone. They’re already doing the work.

Whether you’re returning with the same team or welcoming new faces into the fold, clarity is what makes or breaks your launch. Without it, you risk a start filled with confusion, mixed messaging, and reactive leadership. But when you lead with clarity, you build alignment, momentum, and trust from day one.

So… What Should You Be Doing Right Now to Lead with Clarity?

Here are five powerful actions school leaders can take today to ensure your staff returns to a focused, purpose-driven school year:


1. Define What Success Looks Like This Year

What does success look like for your school this year? Is it about improving Tier 1 instruction? Building stronger student culture? Reducing referrals?
Whatever it is — name it. Then write it in plain, human-centered language. If your staff can’t repeat it in the hallway, it’s not clear enough yet.


2. Identify the 2–3 Big Focus Areas

Now is the time to lock in your top two or three focus areas. These will drive your walkthroughs, your PD, your Coaching, and your leadership conversations.

3. Clarify Expectations — Then Over-Communicate Them

Bonus tip: Use multiple methods. Email. Printed guides. Staff meeting walkthroughs. Model them yourself. Clarity doesn’t come from saying it once. It comes from repetition and consistency.


4. Align Your Leadership Team First

I tell teams this all the time: when you add a new person to the team, you have a new team. You must intentionally build unity around your shared goals, priorities, and how you’ll hold each other accountable.
If you haven’t already had that alignment conversation — do it now. You will only go as far as your leadership team can carry you.


5. Draft Your First 30 Days

Plan your messaging. Set your walkthrough focus. Build intentional time into your calendar to be present, visible, and supportive.
