What’s Next for Parkinson’s Treatment? The Most Exciting Advances | Parkinson’s Today

From adaptive DBS to stem cell trials, gene Therapy, and subcutaneous levodopa pumps — Dr. John Legge and Dr. Jessica Shields share the treatments and technologies that excite them most.

Dr. Shields is a fellowship-trained neurosurgeon with an MD/PhD from Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center and research training at the National Institutes of Health. Her expertise includes deep brain stimulation, a leading surgical treatment for Parkinson’s disease.

Dr. Legge is a board-certified neurologist and fellowship-trained movement disorders specialist focused on Parkinson’s disease. He practices at Eisenhower Health in Palm Springs, CA and believes listening to patients is key to guiding the right treatment.

Parkinson’s Today was presented by the Michael J. Fox Foundation and Parkinson’s Resource Organization (PRO) in 2026.

Jo is the founder and President of Parkinson’s Resource Organization (PRO) established in 1990. The motivation, her late mother and late husband were both diagnosed with Parkinson’s. Each day, PRO reaches thousands of people affected by Parkinson’s, accomplished through a monthly newsletter, an interactive website, one-on-one coaching, support groups, symposia, and public speaking. Ms. Rosen is always at the forefront of what matters in Parkinson’s from services, products, and research, to the potential cure.
