If Your Plan Starts in August, You Might Already Be Behind

If Your Plan Starts In August, You Might Already Be Behind &Raquo; Png Image C7F145863439 1 300X300 2I’ve had the same conversation with multiple school leaders over the past few weeks. They’re excited about next year. They’ve got a vision. They’re thinking about what they want to implement and how things will look in the fall.

And then I ask: “When does this work start?”

Almost every time, I hear: “We’ll roll it out in August.”

And every time, I have the same thought.

That’s not a launch plan.
That’s a delay.

The Illusion of August

Somewhere along the way, we’ve convinced ourselves that August is the starting point.

It’s not. It’s the reveal.

And what gets revealed in August is whether or not we’ve done the work leading up to it.

Because August doesn’t create Clarity—it exposes it.

If your team isn’t aligned, you’ll feel it immediately.
If your message isn’t clear, it will get lost quickly.
If your priorities aren’t defined, everything will feel important—and nothing will get done well.

That’s how leaders end up right back in the Cycle of CHAOS before the year even gets going.

A Better Question

Instead of asking: “What are we going to do in August?”

Ask: “What has to be true by August for this to work?”

That question changes everything.

Because it forces you to stop thinking about the launch…
and start thinking about the preparation.

Backward Mapping the Right Way

1. Get Clear on the Launch

Define exactly what success looks like when you roll this out.

  • What will your team understand?
  • What will they be able to do?
  • What will be different because of this work?

Clarity here sets the direction for everything else.

2. Align the Leadership Team First

And here’s the truth: That level of alignment rarely happens in a typical meeting.

It requires focused, intentional time.

This is why I’m such a strong believer in leadership retreats this time of year.

Because when teams step away from the daily demands of the job and create space to think, plan, and align, everything changes.

  • Conversations go deeper
  • Clarity sharpens
  • Roles become clear
  • Language becomes consistent

You don’t just leave with a plan. You leave with a team that believes in it.

3. Build the Roadmap Backward

If Your Plan Starts In August, You Might Already Be Behind &Raquo; Awesome Road Sign 300X270 1Once you’re aligned, start mapping backward from your launch.

  • When will key decisions be made?
  • When will communication begin?
  • When will you revisit and refine the work?

Put it on the calendar now. If it’s not scheduled, it’s not a priority.

4. Communicate Before You “Roll It Out”

  • Introduce ideas early
  • Reinforce them consistently
  • Give people time to process and connect

By the time August arrives, your team shouldn’t be hearing it for the first time—they should be ready for it.

5. Create Momentum Before the School Year Ends

  • Pilot a piece of the work
  • Model expectations
  • Celebrate early wins

Momentum built in the spring carries into the fall. Momentum delayed until August has to be created from scratch.

The Difference

Wait → Plan → Launch in August → React

Intentional leaders:

Clarify → Align → Build → Communicate → Launch with purpose

Final Thought

August doesn’t determine whether your plan succeeds.

It reveals whether you were intentional enough to prepare for it.

So don’t wait. Start now.

Ready to Get Ahead of Next Year?

Because this level of clarity and alignment doesn’t happen by accident—and it definitely doesn’t happen in between emails.

If your team is serious about getting ahead of next year instead of reacting to it, a well-designed leadership retreat can be the turning point.

If that’s something you’ve been considering, let’s connect. I’d Love to help you design a retreat that actually moves your team forward—not just gives you a day away.

If Your Plan Starts In August, You Might Already Be Behind &Raquo; Heytutorlogo 300X55 1Strong leadership teams don’t wait until August to get clear—they create the conditions for success ahead of time.

And one of the most important conditions is this: leaders must have the space to focus on the work that matters most—alignment, communication, and building momentum with their teams.

That’s hard to do when you’re constantly pulled into operational challenges that can be handled more effectively by the right partners.

That’s why I appreciate the work being done by my friends at HeyTutor, a sponsor of this blog and the Leaning Into Leadership podcast.

HeyTutor provides customized, evidence-based math and ELA tutoring programs for K–12 districts nationwide. Their model is aligned to state standards and designed to produce measurable student Growth—and it’s one of the few tutoring programs to earn Stanford’s National Student Support Accelerator badge.

What stands out most is how they remove the burden from your team. HeyTutor handles everything—from recruiting and training tutors to scheduling and program management—while giving educators access to a simple dashboard to track student progress.

If your district is working to build strong systems for next year while keeping your leadership team focused on what matters most, I encourage you to learn more at heytutor.com.
