The Unexpected Way-How To Style Wrap Pants

Wrap pants (and wrap jeans) are not here to blend in. They’re architectural. I consider them interesting. They’re definitely conversation starters. And yes, because of that overlapping front panel, they do require a bit of thought.

Quote of the day: “Surround yourself with only people who are going to lift you higher.” Oprah Winfrey

But here’s the good news: once you understand what they’re doing visually, styling them becomes fun, which is always my goal.

We are noticing that more voluminous silhouettes are appearing on the bottom half, and I think it’s a good thing. Of course, this comes with the mindset that the goal isn’t to look slimmer or taller.

No one compliments you because “you look so tall”. Compliments rain on you when you look fabulous or striking.

And I believe that knowing how to style wrap pants can bring on those compliments.

Which means the top half of your outfit matters, but not in a restrictive way.

If wrap pants are a little too bold for you, I have other articles about tops to wear with other pants:
Tops to wear with wide leg pants
Casual outfits with flare jeans

Style tip: Not all wrap pants will be created equal. My pair is denim that is mostly cotton. That means they don’t drape as much as a lighter material would.

Outfit #1: Shorter Sweater (But Not Boring)

This first look is the one most people default to when learning how to style wrap pants–that balance thing, if the lower half is voluminous, then keep the top half fitted and shorter.

So that’s what I did. I wore my newly designed sweater made from a couple of my knitting projects that never got finished, and combined with a pair of cut-up skinny jeans (that I put in my sewing room after asking the question of how many jeans do you need?).
The shorter length keeps the waistline visible, which lets the wrap detail shine instead of getting lost.

This is a great entry point if you’re new to wrap pants and want something that feels intentional but approachable.

Style tip: Just because the jeans are extra, doesn’t mean your top half has to be boring. Sure, you can start with a plain t-shirt, but be sure to experiment with other options too.

Outfit #2: Cardigan Option

Same wrap jeans, but this time with a “cardigan”.

The reason I put the word cardigan in quotations is that the outer layer is a zippered top, which I wore backwards to zip up the front OVER another cardigan.

This option still copies the idea of pairing the wrap jeans with a shorter top, but it looks totally different.

One reason is that the outer cardigan is longer on the sides and covers the wrap portion somewhat.

The other difference is the vibe of the look. This one is more feminine as opposed to artsy.

Style tip: Shoes matter. Have fun pairing your wrap jeans with booties, sneakers, or Mary Janes. Anything modern will be fabulous.

Outfit #3: Shirtdress Worn Open

While most advice about how to style wrap pants says “short tops only,” I wanted to show you another option, because style is about experimenting, not obeying.

My shirtdress is 100% cotton and doesn’t drape easily as opposed to one of a slinkier material.

My experimentation was to see if I could wear a dress over these jeans. Not any old dress, but I went with a shirt dress that I could unbutton the bottom half of.

What ended up happening is I echoed the lines of the wrap pants with the shirtdress hem, which I thought was really cool.

This look proves that longer layers can work with wrap pants when you let them flow instead of buttoning them shut.

Style tip: I used 2 clips in the back to fit the shirtdress at my waist, which pulled the front panels more open.

The Real Secret to Styling Wrap Pants

If there’s one thing to remember when learning how to style wrap pants, it’s this:

You’ll never really know what looks good until you try it.

Sure, a tucked-in or shorter top is going to look great the first time.
But don’t automatically assume all longer tops aren’t going to look good.

In fact, some bigger tops could be origami-ed to be shorter or more fitted.
Or use my style tips by creating the same lines as your wrap pants.

Have fun, try lots of options, and don’t forget to take a photo of the ones you like…this helps you see them from a camera perspective, and then you can save them for future reference.
