How to Style Winter Tights (Yes, Even for Older Women)

If there’s one cold-weather accessory that never fails to bring me joy, it’s a fabulous pair of winter tights. And before you think tights are only for the young, let me stop you right there. Today, we’re experimenting with how to style winter tights in ways that feel modern, creative, warm, and absolutely appropriate for women of every age.

Quote of the day: “Practice isn’t the thing you do once you’re good. It’s the thing you do that makes you good.” Malcom Gladwell

Because here’s the truth, I will happily die on a hill proclaiming: Aging does not mean dimming your style. It means the opposite. It’s your invitation to dress bigger, brighter, smarter, and with far more personality than you ever dared before. Winter tights are one of the easiest tools to help you do that.

In fact, today my crew is showcasing three totally different approaches. From classic opaque black tights to printed tights to a bold, vintage yellow pair that absolutely stole my heart, you’ll see just how versatile winter tights can be.

Style Winter Tights For Cold Weather

Why Winter Tights Still Matter

Before we get into the outfits, let’s talk about why winter tights deserve a spot in your cold-weather wardrobe:

  • They add warmth without bulk.
  • They expand your outfit options, meaning your skirts and shorts can stay in rotation.
  • They’re a chance to add personality in a small, low-commitment way.
  • They let you play with color even on dreary winter days.
  • And best of all… they fit no matter what your weight is doing this week.

Pro tip: If you’re one of those who think tights are too TIGHT…then size up. Or try Snag tights that are made to be looser.

Whether you’re someone who loves neutrals or someone who treats getting dressed like opening a box of crayons, you can absolutely style winter tights in a way that feels like YOU.

Lesley: Black Opaque Tights

Lesley is showing how to style winter tights in a subtle, wearable way, which I consider the best place to start if they make you nervous.

She styled a pair of black opaque tights, the winter workhorse that every woman should own at least one pair of. They’re sleek, warm (especially if you get the fleece-lined variety), and they immediately make an outfit feel polished.

Insider tip: Live where it’s VERY cold? Then, of course, you should be wearing fleece lined tights. And if fit is an issue, wear the footless ones and add socks.

Lesley paired her black tights with a patterned mini skort (they aren’t just for summer), a white blouse, and a black vest layered over the top. The whole look has that clever balance: traditional elements mixed with just enough modern flair to feel intentional and chic.

Details:

-Adding a scarf to act like a men’s ascot is a great yin/yang element. Notice the pin holding it together AND acting as decor.
-Then the addition of the red purse is so modern and fun. Sure, it picks up the red from the scarf, but it’s a different shade, and don’t forget to notice the red PAIR eyeglass toppers.

Charlotte: Blue Printed Tights

You know how I always say fashion gets more fun when you throw out the “rules”? My mom understood the assignment.

Printed tights often scare women because we’ve been conditioned to think they add attention to the wrong places. But here’s the secret: printed tights can actually be the best focal point.

Charlotte paired hers with denim culottes, a graphic tee, and a light blue cardigan, finishing the outfit with pink flats and a textured scarf.

This look is full of personality but still incredibly wearable.

Details:

-These culottes have been a great staple in my mom’s closet. She’s worn them with both a tucked vs untucked top before. When she first got them, they were about 6-8 inches longer (to her ankles), so she shortened them, and they work wonderfully to show off tights and boots.
-At first, my mom wore blue loafers, but the outfit needed more contrast. So I had her switch out to these embellished flats (a discontinued style that is only $25 and use code COMFY10) with a matching scarf hanging down the back so you can still read her graphic tee…which says “The sewing machine is calling and I must go.
-Notice my mom’s belt—it’s a men’s tie.

Jodie: Vintage Yellow Winter Tights

I wanted to showcase the opportunity to bring a little sunshine to winter dressing.

It’s no surprise that I have a drawerful of tights in many colors and prints, and I never turn down the opportunity to add more to my collection.
I found this pair of vintage yellow tights on Etsy and just couldn’t resist.

These vintage yellow tights are the epitome of why fashion should be fun. They’re quirky, unexpected, and cheerful in the middle of the colder season.
I would argue that the older you get, the more these quirky pieces belong in your closet. You’ve already been wearing classic and safe items, so why not try new things?

I paired my yellow tights with a pair of DIYed tan suede shorts, a white sweater I DIYed, adding pink bows and buttons, as well as a yellow striped blouse hanging below the sweater for more layers.

Details:

-I created these shorts from a pair of suede thrifted pants. Here isthe process, yet I noticed that I still don’t wear them much. I think part of the issue is how they blend into my leg color, so maybe the key is to always wear them with tights.
-The sweater was passed down to me from my friend who passed away, but it’s not really my thing…until I added the pink bows (I made them myself) and even added buttons to the middle of each bow.
-Pink and yellow always seem like one of these underrated color combinations, which is why I adore it.

Fun To Style Winter Tights

Final Thoughts

Learning how to style winter tights opens up a world of possibilities, especially as we get older. Warmth, comfort, color, creativity, these are all things that tights can deliver.

Pro tip: And if you think you might be too warm in your tights, let’s talk about that. We all know how the mornings are cooler, so create your outfit with the tights. And then when it warms up, just pull them off and hide them in your purse.
