We Came Here to Win: What Great Teams Teach Us About Leadership

We Came Here To Win: What Great Teams Teach Us About Leadership &Raquo; 6F4B7Cc6 6989 4016 9E21 E855Af3B210D 1 105 C 225X300 2If you’ve ever watched a team come from behind to win, you’ve witnessed the power of belief. I saw it firsthand last weekend as my Denver Broncos—yes, my Broncos—went on the road to face the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles. Trailing by 14 points as the fourth quarter began, it looked like a young, developing team simply wouldn’t have the firepower to pull off an upset.

But then something shifted. You could feel it—even through the TV screen. Confidence began to build, belief spread like wildfire, and a group of young players who’d been learning how to win suddenly believed they could.

That belief changed everything.

Leadership Lessons from the Field

I’m not sharing this to relive a football win (apologies to my Eagles friends), but because what unfolded on that field mirrors what happens in organizations every day.

The Broncos didn’t come back because of one star player. They came back because they were unified around a single goal—winning together. Their coach, Sean Payton, made that crystal clear after the game when asked why he went for two instead of playing it safe. His response?

“We came here to win.”

That’s Clarity. That’s intentional leadership.

Meanwhile, the Eagles—one of the most talented teams in football—looked out of sync. Players were frustrated about their touches, checking social media to compare themselves, and even quitting on plays. The contrast couldn’t have been sharper: one team focused on the goal, the other on themselves.

The Power of Team Alignment

The same dynamic plays out in schools, districts, and organizations everywhere.

  • When one teacher is focused on proving they’re the best instead of helping their grade-level team succeed…

  • When one department worries more about metrics than mission…

  • When leaders compete for attention rather than alignment…

…the team loses.

But when every member of the team knows what matters most—when they set aside ego and personal agenda for the sake of the shared goal—magic happens. Progress accelerates. Morale strengthens. And success becomes possible, even when the odds say it shouldn’t be.

From Sports to Systems: What Leaders Can Do

Here are a few actions you can take this week to help your team “come here to win”:

  1. Clarify the Goal.
Make sure everyone on your team knows exactly what “winning” looks like. Vague goals lead to vague effort.

  2. Name and Celebrate Collective Wins.
Shift the focus from individual performance to team achievement. Recognize progress toward shared outcomes.

  3. Address the Ego Factor.
If individual recognition or competition is creating friction, talk about it openly. Recenter your team on purpose, not position.

  4. Model Unity.
As the leader, your behavior sets the tone. Show what it means to sacrifice personal spotlight for team success.

  5. Reignite Belief.
When your team starts doubting—when setbacks mount—remind them of what’s possible. Confidence and belief are contagious.

Final Thought

Leadership isn’t about never being behind. It’s about rallying together when you are.

Just like that young team on Sunday, your leadership team might not yet have it all figured out. But if you believe in each other, stay focused on the goal, and keep saying, “We came here to win,” you’ll build something unstoppable.

If you or your team could use a guide to walk alongside you in this work, I’d Love to help. Let’s talk about how we can bring this kind of transformation to your school or district.

Together, we can build AWESOME leadership teams.
