Australia’s Queen Forever is recognised as one of the best Queen tribute bands on the planet today.
Founder Gareth Hill discusses the origins of the band, which started in 2006 with me here.
He explains that his passion for Queen began at age 11 when a friend introduced him to "Bohemian Rhapsody," and he later pursued music theater. After being disappointed by a Queen tribute band in 2004, Gareth decided to form his own band with a guitarist he met at a pub.

Freddie Mercury Tribute Artist Journey

Gareth shares his journey of becoming a Freddie Mercury tribute artist after seeing a band that inspired him to pursue his passion for Freddie Mercury’s music and persona. He explains how the band evolved from a casual jam session to a touring group, with the original members leaving and being replaced by new musicians. Gareth emphasizes that he sees his role as a form of music theater, where he embodies Freddie’s spirit and adapts his performance style to suit different venues and audiences.

Freddie Mercury’s Resilient Journey

Gareth discusses his extensive research on Freddie Mercury, focusing on the singer’s upbringing and the factors that contributed to his success. He explains that Freddie’s difficult childhood, including being teased at boarding school, helped him develop a thick skin and escape from his past. Gareth emphasizes that Freddie never spoke about his childhood in interviews, highlighting his ability to focus on his career and personal life.

Freddie Mercury’s Dual Personality Insights

Gareth discusses Freddie Mercury’s dual personality, noting that while Freddie presented a loud and energetic persona on stage, he was actually shy and quiet in private.

Freddie Mercury’s Stage Presence

Gareth discusses his interpretation of Freddie Mercury’s personality, suggesting that Mercury would have been flattered but uninterested in a tribute show, as he was confident and comfortable on stage. He describes Mercury’s unique ability to make every audience member feel seen and acknowledged, which Gareth admired and aimed to emulate in his own performances. Gareth mentions his upcoming shows in Melbourne and his busy tour schedule for the year.

Upcoming Tour and Performance Plans

Hello, I’m Sandy Kaye. A freelance broadcaster, journalist and producer who has spent more than 35 years on both sides of radio and television microphones. I’ve worked with every TV network in Australia, have produced and presented for countless radio stations around the country and have hosted my own commercial radio talk-back show. I’ve even held the distinction of being Sydney’s first female newsreader on radio – way back when!

Today my passion is A Breath of Fresh Air which allows me to immerse myself in one of my favourite things – music. I just love all kinds of music and am fascinated by the people who make it. In particular, it’s the music of the '60s '70s and '80s that takes me back to my youth and means so much to me.

As a journalist, I’m all about digging deep into the classic hits of our time.
I bring you intimate, warm, fireside chats with the artists who tell us about their lives both then and now.
We learn about what makes them tick, who they are in their professional and private lives and how they went about making the soundtrack to our lives.

'A Breath of Fresh Air’ is exceptional - exceptional not because of me, but rather because of the stories that some of the best-known musical artists choose to share with me.

I created this podcast to honour them. It’s all about THEIR lives, THEIR stories, THEIR music, told now, in THEIR voices, before they’re lost forever.

I see my podcast as a personal labour of love, but also as an archival legacy for music fans and practitioners alike, both current and future, who otherwise might never know of the amazing people who helped build the industry.

I really hope you enjoy each and every episode of A Breath of Fresh Air.
