When I started seeing baseball caps as a trending item, I thought that even we older women could bring some input on how to style baseball caps.
Quote of the day: “Don’t miss out on something that could be great, just because it could also be difficult.” Unknown
Baseball hats aren’t just for hiding bad hair days or shielding your eyes from the sun while at a game. These hats have officially made their way into the world of fashion-forward dressing. If you notice, the younger girls aren’t wearing bucket hats as much, as they are leaning into how to style baseball caps.

Just like anything else in the fashion world, it’s all about how you style it. You know I’m not one to keep anything too sporty or too classic. So let’s talk about how to style baseball caps in a way that feels chic, modern, and definitely ageless.
I like to think of a baseball cap as just another accessory. It may not be something you wear every day, but they are powerful when you need them.
Insider tip: You can find interesting, colorful, and printed hats galore in the widget below. If you are looking for one in particular, ask me, as I have access to tons in my affiliate program.
BTW, the three of us chose different clothing items to style baseball caps.
Charlotte wore pants, I wore shorts (but not short shorts), and Lesley wore a dress. So many options…so little time.

Even with pants, the styling of a baseball cap can verge on elegant. My mom wore a gold baseball cap that added a hint of metallic glam to her outfit. She paired it with an embroidered white blouse, sage green jogger pants, and metallic ballet flats.
What I Love about this look is the use of a hat to enhance a sophisticated outfit, but not dress it down per se. The gold cap doesn’t scream “sporty” due to the metallic detail.
Insider tip: It goes to show that baseball caps have come a long way. You can find them in tons of different textures/colors to make them stylish.

Details:
-My mom has worn these cargo pants when we discussed what shoes to wear with cargo pants. She doesn’t love them, but I think they add a modern edge to the look.
–This blouse has been worn with denim culottes in the past. It gives off an artsy vibe that is right up her alley.
-You just gotta love the purse. Fringe brings in a whole different style element that creates such a fabulous look.

No surprise in that I’m all about bright colors and bold patterns. So I couldn’t resist this orange baseball cap, especially since it perfectly matched the hues in my multi-colored silky top. I wore it with faded wash Bermuda denim shorts, strappy pink-and-orange heels, and carried a woven circle bag for an extra punch of fun.
What made this look work was the dichotomy (one of my favorite style tricks). My cap added a sporty element, but the rest of the outfit was artsy and even a little fancy. The heels elevated the shorts, and the entire look tickled my fancy.

Details:
-I love the idea of these baggy, bermuda shorts for summer. The silhouette reminds me of a skirt, yet you have the coverage of pants. They are similar to the pair I DIYed from jeans, but are solid and looser.
-My baseball cap was a promotional item from a skincare brand, but that doesn’t stop me from wearing it out and about. I bet most people don’t notice the logo.
-I’m wearing a faux hair bun over my real hair that is pulled through the baseball cap’s back closure.

Lesley told me that she’s been wearing baseball caps for years and thus has at least a dozen of them.
Here’s why she loves them:
-Stay on well during water aerobics
-Easy to drive in
-Don’t fly off in a convertible or on a bike
Her cap had a floral pattern, which made it feel less like a sports accessory and more like a whimsical detail. It’s a great reminder that baseball caps don’t have to be solid colors, as they can be as expressive and unique as the rest of your outfit.

Details:
-Proof that dresses don’t have to be “dressy.” I love a shift dress like this to stay cool in our warm weather.
-Lesley used the print from her hat as inspiration for her shoes and purse. They aren’t the same prints, but they interact well together with similar colors.
-Check out the amazing bracelet from Just Be Youtiful.
What I love most about this trend is how versatile it is. Just like how Mireille and I showed that activewear skirts could be dressed up, I think it’s the same for how to style baseball caps.
They are no longer restricted to gym days and grocery runs. Here are a few other unexpected ways to style them:
Let me remind you that not all baseball caps are created equally. If you try one on, and it looks funny, here are the things to consider:
–Crown. Some are taller, some are closer to your head. Try them all.
–Color. This is huge to give the right glow to your face.
–Bill. Most are originally straight. With your hands bend it to mirror the curvature of your face. That brim is usually made of cardboard, so it will change shape.
–Closure. In the back is how you fit it to your head. Sometimes, it’s better to have it looser and sometimes it’s better to have it tighter. Play around.
–Lining. If you struggle with hair damage, then think about the ones with silk linings. It’s like sleeping on a silk pillowcase for hair Health.

I get it. Some women don’t think hats work on them or look good. But fashion is about trying things on, literally and figuratively. You might be surprised when you try on multiple ones that there are a few that look good on you.
Be like Mikey, and try it.
Insider tip: I always tell the story about when we were looking for a hat for Rob to wear on our Mediterranean cruise, and they all looked silly on him. We laughed and laughed, but had to get him a sun hat for sun protection functionality. However, after he wore the hat over and over, it started to look “normal” and now he wears all types of hats.
I believe that it’s the mere-exposure effect.
This is not the first time hats have been the subject on my site. If you want a pep talk or more inspiration, make sure to check out these articles:

The humble baseball cap has gotten a style makeover and we are here for it! I believe the key is to have fun and express yourself.
And if you still love your bucket hats, wear them too! There’s room in your closet (and on your head) for more than one trend.
Don’t forget: style is about experimenting, and a baseball cap might just be your next unexpected hero accessory.
