How To Style Burgundy & Metallics

When the JtouchofStyle crew was working on color combinations with burgundy last year, I had the idea to create an article on how to style burgundy and metallics. This color duo marries burgundy’s warmth and richness with metallic tones’ shimmering elegance.

Quote of the day: “If you do not actively choose a better way, then society, culture, and the general inertia of life will push you into a worse way. The default is distraction, not improvement.” James Clear

Burgundy is one of those colors that tend to be relegated to the winter month. Still, as we proved in our original burgundy color combination article, it works so well with pastels, light neutrals, and even unexpected colors just as wonderfully.

Yet in the winter, when the days are darker and many women reach for darker clothing, it’s nice to have a combination of burgundy and metallics to give the outfit shine and lightness.

As a reminder, metallics can be on the warm side with gold, rose gold, copper, and brass. They also can be on the cool side with silver, chrome, and nickel.

Insider tip: The difference between the warm vs cool metallics is that the “warm” ones have a yellowish or reddish hue while the “cool” ones have a bluish or greyish tone.

I have written many articles about color combinations including metallics. Make sure to check them out as color combos are always in style.

As much as I love my site, Jodie’s Touch of Style, I really enjoy putting together my daily emails. I consider my emails an extension of my blog that is chocked full of positive inspiration that one friend calls a “Variety Show.”
I include articles, videos, and posts that strike my fancy and since I have no siblings to share with, I share with you.

Insider info: If daily emails are too much, you can opt into just getting them on Saturday. I appreciate any support.

Jodie: Gold Sequin Pants

I found wide-leg, gold sequin pants at Just Be Youtiful and knew they needed to reside in my closet. While some women might think they would only work for fancy events, I plan to wear them with t-shirts, sweatshirts, and all types of clothing.

The burgundy sweater is one that I knit over 10 years ago and I layered it over a burgundy/purple t-shirt.

Why It Works:

The metallic pants immediately grab attention with their statement-making shine and intricate pattern. The top portion of the outfit is more subdued even though it’s interesting in and of itself.

Insider tip: The wide-leg pants with a cropped sweater are one guideline suggested by stylists. Yet notice that my cardigan isn’t tight or fitted. So basically I’m wearing 2 flowy items.

Styling Tips:

  • Accessories: A fluffy white handbag adds texture and an unexpected touch of whimsy. It’s a small but impactful detail that enhances the look. This is a favorite winter purse because I can easily add brooches to it to change it up. You might remember seeing it with bow brooches on it.
  • Footwear: Rose gold booties mirror the shine of the pants, tying the outfit together beautifully. Even though the booties and pants don’t match exactly, they work harmoniously together.
  • Jewelry: Keep it minimal—gold earrings and a delicate necklace complement the metallic tones without competing for attention.

This look is perfect for holiday parties, gallery openings, or any event where you want to make a stylish statement while staying comfortable. Although I see no reason not to wear it to the grocery store.

Nancy: Metallic Pencil Skirt

My stepmom, Nancy who was visiting us for the holidays, pairs a burgundy textured blouse with a metallic pencil skirt. This look strikes the perfect balance between subtle glamour and classic sophistication.

Why It Works:

The tailored fit of the pencil skirt is iconic and always looks fabulous.

In fact, Nancy has worn this skirt many times in the past when we were discussing glitter and seeing that her original photo was popular on Pinterest, I thought it was high time she wore the skirt again.

Insider tip: Her measurements have changed since we took those original photos, so she had the skirt altered to fit better. Alterations are key. While some stylists promote getting rid of things that don’t fit, there are many times clothing can be altered.

The burgundy blouse features a soft texture and a slightly loose fit, making it both comfortable and flattering.

Because the blouse isn’t very heavy, Nancy layered a black t-shirt under the burgundy top.

Insider tip: While you “see” the black t-shirt, I still call this hidden layering, because it’s not the focal point. If it were colder, you could wear a turtleneck, fleece top, or even long underwear under/or instead of the black top.

Styling Tips:

  • Accessories: A silver crossbody bag keeps the metallic theme consistent while adding a modern touch.
  • Footwear: Silver t-strap flats maintain the outfit’s polished vibe while ensuring all-day comfort. These shoes are proof that you don’t need heels to look chic!
  • Jewelry: Another delicate necklace adds more shine near the face without redirecting the focus away from the rest of the look.

This ensemble is ideal for office parties, dinner dates, or any semi-formal gathering. But again, if you threw on sneakers, there’s no reason you couldn’t or shouldn’t wear this outfit while running errands.

Charlotte: Metallic Pleated Skirt

For the final look, my mom wore her metallic pleated skirt styled with a burgundy long-sleeve top layered over a classic yet whimsical white collared dickey.
Charlotte wore this same skirt with a red blazer in the past.

Why It Works:

My mom followed the guidelines that state a voluminous bottom half looks better with a more fitted top half. I love how she added a touch of whimsy with the faux fur and embellished dickey.

What looks like a belt is actually the skirt’s waistband. My mom added a bling pin at the center to recreate a belt buckle.

Insider tip: This is one of my favorite ways to wear a brooch. Just add it to a waistband to look like a belt without having the restrictions of a belt.

Styling Tips:

  • Accessories: The fuzzy earrings compliment the fuzzy edges of the dickey and give off a fun vibe. An interesting detail is that these earrings keep your ears warm.
  • Footwear: Burgundy pumps were my mom’s choice for shoes since she correlates skirts as a dressy item.
  • Purse: My mom kept the focus on the metallics and whimsical elements by choosing a non-descript purse.

This look is perfect for formal occasions, holiday brunches, or even a night at the theater. But just like the other 2 looks, this could be easily casualized with sneakers and a denim jacket to wear for errands.

Insider tip: This is the type of skirt, I consider perfect for traveling. It’s long enough to cover you especially when sitting down, but not too long to get in the way. Plus the elastic waistband is ideal.
Skirts are easier for bathroom breaks since you don’t worry about them pooling on germy floors.

Why Burgundy and Metallics Work So Well Together

There’s a reason burgundy and metallics are such a dynamic duo. Burgundy, with its rich and warm undertones, pairs beautifully with metallics, which tend to add a lighter element to the overall look.

Whether you prefer bold metallic pants, a subtle pencil skirt, or a flowing pleated option, there’s a way to make this combination work for your style.

General Tips for Styling Burgundy and Metallics:

  1. Play with Textures: Combining different textures, like the softness of a sweater with the sheen of metallics, adds depth and interest.
  2. Don’t Limit the Shine: Many stylists will say to limit shine to one or two pieces per outfit to maintain a cohesive look. But remember, your style should be unique, so if you want more, add more.
  3. Experiment with Layers: Layering is a great way to add dimension and tailor the look to different occasions. Or if you want to wear a summery item, think about hidden layering so it works for the season.
  4. Remember your Footwear: Shoes can make or break an outfit. The only essentials are that it’s comfy and luckily in this day and age, it can also be stylish.

Final Thoughts

Burgundy and metallics are a match made in fashion heaven, offering endless possibilities for creating chic, stylish looks. Whether you’re drawn to bold statement pieces or prefer subtle accents, there’s a way to make this combination work for any occasion. By mixing textures, playing with proportions, and accessorizing thoughtfully, you can create outfits that are as unique and fabulous as you are.
