A Wealth Of Ideas For What To Wear With Burgundy

Burgundy is such a rich, elegant color that brings an air of sophistication to any outfit. Its deep, wine-inspired hue works beautifully across seasons and can be styled in so many fabulous ways. That’s why I’ve put together a wealth of ideas for what to wear with burgundy.
What is a wealth of ideas?
20+ color pairings so you have a wide variety to incorporate into your looks.

Quote of the day: “A challenge only becomes an obstacle when you bow to it.” Ray Davis

I broke down the 20+ ideas into categories to make it easy for you, but also remember to pin your favorite ideas of what to wear with burgundy.

Insider tip: Sometimes the best idea of how to come up with options for what to wear with burgundy is to go through your closet and hold up your burgundy item next to each and every piece of clothing you have.
It can be the unexpected pairings that look the best.

I love the idea of how a color can be paired with other colors and I have a ton of inspiration if you need more color combinations.

1-What to wear with Burgundy-Neutrals

When in doubt, neutrals are the perfect companions to any strong color, and burgundy is no exception. These shades offer a polished, understated look that allows burgundy to be the star.

  • White: Brighten up burgundy with a crisp white. This option is a great contrast and will put the focus on the burgundy item.
  • Ivory: These warm neutrals soften burgundy’s boldness. You still get a striking contrast against the burgundy.
  • Black: If you like to keep it dark, black is a great option. The contrast is dramatic yet sophisticated.
  • Browns: There are a multitude of shades of brown that create an earthy feel with burgundy.
  • Gray: This combo has a softer, more relaxed feel than black. Light or charcoal gray works well, because it is a contrast yet not as stark as white or ivory.

2. Pastels

Burgundy and pastels create a beautiful balance by mixing intensity with softness. Pastel shades keep the look light, which is ideal if you’re aiming for a more playful or romantic vibe.

  • Blush & Light Pinks: Obviously this combination is a favorite since I have 3 outfits that incorporate this pairing. And let’s laugh at all the ways I can describe light pink.

Insider tip: Don’t concentrate on the color name. Just try them next to each other to see how they go.

  • Lilac: Lilac could be considered dreamy, and adds whimsy to burgundy’s richness. This combination works wonderfully for spring looks but don’t limit yourself to only one season.
  • Light Blue: This cool pastel is gentle but striking against burgundy’s warmth.

Insider tip: Remember, burgundy is just a darker shade and value of red, so any shade of red should be wonderful with it.

3. Vibrant Colors: Bold and Expressive

For those ready to make a statement, pairing burgundy with other vibrant hues can add energy to your look. These pairings are for the fashion-forward, adding a pop of color without overwhelming.

  • Bright Pink: Pairing burgundy with a bright pink adds a modern twist to your outfit.
  • Mustard Yellow: This warm, autumn-inspired pairing is a great choice. I love this combination as it creates an energetic, seasonal vibe.
  • Navy: This combination is regal, creating a bold, dynamic look. It’s dark but feel free to add a lighter color as my mother did.
  • Red: Red and burgundy may be one of those combinations that seem crazy together, but since they are just different shades/values of the same color, it works.

4. Unique Pairings: Surprising Twists for the Style Adventurous

If you love exploring unexpected color combinations, these unique pairings will take your burgundy styling to the next level. Don’t be afraid to mix things up and step outside the box!

  • Peach: The color peach can create a fun and trendy look with burgundy. Some peach colors might be considered pastels, but my example is more vibrant and give the burgundy some personality.
  • Olive Green: Earthy and chic, olive green with burgundy feels balanced and grounded. It has the vibe of neutrals yet isn’t as basic.
  • Lime Green: Lime green and burgundy create a surprisingly harmonious look that feels modern and fun.
  • Turquoise: If you’re feeling daring, turquoise is an adventurous pairing with burgundy.
  • Orange: This is one option of what to wear with burgundy, that many of you might snub your nose at. However, I am of the opinion that it can look amazing. Part of the secret is what you pair it with, and if you notice in my example, the print of my scarf ties the colors together perfectly.
  • Denim: While you could categorize denim as a neutral because we wear it with everything, I would also consider it unexpected. The variety of washes of denim allows you to get different looks with the color combination.

5-Metallics

Metallics are the perfect way to elevate burgundy, adding a shimmer and a touch of glam. These colors enhance burgundy’s richness and are easy to incorporate with accessories if you don’t have clothing items that are metallic.

  • Silver: For a more modern, sleek look, silver pairs beautifully with burgundy. While this metallic combination is fabulous, it also seems very neutral and can be great for those who don’t want to go too bold.
  • Gold: Gold and burgundy create a luxe combination, ideal for holiday parties or evening events. I would consider this pairing to be all about warmth and sophistication.

Insider tip: Many metallics look like other colors if you struggle with this pairing. For example silver can remind you of grey and gold can appear as a pale yellow.

Final Thoughts: Make Burgundy Your New Favorite

Burgundy is such a versatile color that works well with a variety of other shades, whether you prefer soft pastels, bold contrasts, or neutral tones.

Experimenting with different color combinations can open up a whole new world of outfit possibilities, so don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone.
