Practical Ideas For Restyling Clothing
Who doesn’t love a good wardrobe refresh? But instead of rushing out to buy new pieces, why not use these ideas for restyling clothing?
Quote of the day: “Don’t be “most people.” Anonymous
As older women, we know that timeless pieces in our closets can be endlessly versatile with just a little imagination and creativity. This allows us to bring new life to our favorite clothing without spending a fortune.
Insider tip: There’s another advantage to restyling clothing you already have…it builds new brain pathways that keep your mind sharp.
One of the secrets for restyling clothing is to stop categorizing your clothing items.
-Do you think a dress is for dress-up only? Wrong.
-Do you always match the colors in an outfit? Well, stop it.
-Are you stuck in a certain style that you have worn for years? It’s time to change that.
In today’s post, we restyle clothing we’ve worn in past articles from our Magnificent 8 group. Each outfit will look stylish yet totally different than the original.
Let’s dive in and explore how you can turn your closet into a treasure trove of restyled outfits!
Restyle #1: Changing out the Color Scheme-Charlotte
Let’s start with one of the easiest ideas for restyling clothing. Change out the color scheme.
Matching the colors in a clothing item is the “garanimals” of adult dressing. Sure, it works, and it’s exactly what you learned.
But you can increase the size of your closet by jumping outside of the matchy-matchy looks.
For Charlotte’s restyling clothing project, I had her style this black and hot pink blazer she originally wore with black pants and a hot pink print top.
This time, I assigned her the task of wearing it with a color that wasn’t in the blazer.
There are many color schemes you could play around with for this experiment. My mom chose to keep it simple with a neutral-gray. She wore a column of grey under her pink and black blazer and then made it look intentional by adding the hot pink purse.
Outfit Details: By wearing a top with glittered embroidery on the front, Charlotte doesn’t need to add a necklace to the look. If you are a minimalist, this is an easy way to add extra to your look without adding another item.

Restyle #2: From Casual to Dressy-Lesley
Who doesn’t love a pink leather jacket? It’s bold, playful, and a little bit edgy—perfect for adding personality to any outfit. But if you’re only wearing it as a casual look, you’re missing out on its full potential. Just because leather is considered edgy and casual, doesn’t mean it can’t get glammed up.
Since Lesley wore this jacket with jeans when we discussed pink and pearls, I asked her to incorporate it in a fancier look.
Since most older women consider their LBD a go-to for dressier events, Lesley used hers to elevate her pink leather jacket.
She even incorporated pearls for her look and is ready for a hot date night.
Outfit Details: A multi-strand of pearls can be fun for any outfit. See how Lesley knotted one strand to give it more sass and texture?

Restyle #3 Change the Look-Jodie
This vintage navy lace dress holds a special charm, not only for its classic look but also for the beautiful history behind it, having belonged to my grandmother. Incorporating a piece from a previous generation into your wardrobe is a wonderful way to celebrate family heritage while adding a personal twist.
Insider tip: Older lace items like this aren’t stretchy because it was way before the time of spandex. So I have found that I have to be more careful putting it on and taking it off.
This navy lace dress of my grandma’s came with a matching slip to wear with it. While it looks fabulous with the matching slip, you can’t appreciate the beautiful lace that way.
That’s why I thought it would be fun to layer it over a white sweater dress (the dress has been styled with skirts over top).
While I changed up the vibe of this look as Lesley did with restyling clothing idea #2 by taking it from dressy to casual. But I changed it up in an entirely different way with this layering.
Outfit Details: The disadvantage of wearing the lace dress over the white one is that you see some areas where the lace has torn. But it’s old. And I’m all about embracing the imperfections of my clothes as well as my body.
I incorporated a bunch of brooches attaching them to the pocket of my white jean jacket and added casual items like my sneakers and fedora.
The Takeaway: Restyling Clothing is the Key to a Versatile Wardrobe
One of the best things about restyling is that it breathes new life into the pieces you already love. Whether it’s a lace dress, a classic black and pink blazer, or a statement-making pink leather jacket, there are endless ways to make your wardrobe work for you.
Don’t forget, part of the joy in restyling pieces like this is the endless potential they offer—whether you’re mixing in new textures, changing up the vibe, or adding pops of color, the possibilities are limitless!
By thinking of your clothing with an open mind, you have lots more styling options at your fingertips.
So next time you find yourself standing in front of your closet, feeling like you have nothing to wear, remember that the answer might be in restyling what you already own. Restyling clothing is the secret to a versatile wardrobe that keeps you looking fabulous without buying something new every time.
