About 100 infants have died in Fisher Price Rock ‘n Play infant sleepers. And, unfortunately, kids are continuing to die because the deadly sleepers are still being used and sold second hand. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission is upset with Mattel and Meta for not doing enough to keep the dangerous infant sleepers away from consumers. “At best, CPSC is catching these unlawful products after they have been listed for sale and made available to the public,” CPSC Chair Alexander Hoehn-Saric said in a letter to Meta. “Facebook is uniquely positioned to identify recalled and violative... Continue Reading

When You’re Considering A Side Hustle, Be Realistic About What’s Involved Including The Time Commitment &Raquo; 6A00E550081576883402B7519Dca34200C 320Wi

As a fan of the FIRE (financial independence retire early) movement, I thought I’d try a side hustle, one of the FIRE recommendations. Since I have pinecones that fall on my driveway all year around, I decided to collect them and sell them on craigslist. I have two kinds of pinecones; those from European pine and Douglas fir trees. I collected about a dozen boxes of pinecones, checked out what people were selling them for, and advertised them on craigslist. One woman came before Christmas and bought a small box. She was very happy to get them, saying the pinecones at hobby stores were extremely... Continue Reading

Agency Seeks Comments On How You’re Impacted By The Data Companies Collect About You &Raquo; 6A00E550081576883402B6853081Bd200D 320Wi

Have you ever had a problem because of data a company has collected on you? The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau is launching an inquiry into companies that track and collect information on the details of people’s personal lives. It’s seeking input on data brokers and how their business practices impact people’s daily life. Companies that collect and monetize peoples’ personal data can pose significant harms, including privacy and security risks, the facilitation of harassment and fraud, and the spread of inaccurate information. People often have little choice on whether to do business... Continue Reading

Watch Out For So Called ‘Full Vehicle’ Extended Warranty Protection &Raquo; 6A00E550081576883402B685301400200D 320Wi 1

When you take two consumer problems, telemarketing and extended warranties, and put them together, it can result in disaster. The Federal Trade Commission announced a settlement Friday in its case against American Vehicle Protection – who it charged last year with running a telemarketing extended auto warranty scheme that cheated people out of more than $6 million. “AVP misled consumers about who they were and what they were selling and called a large number of consumers who were on the FTC’s Do Not Call List,” said Samuel Levine, director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection.... Continue Reading

It’s National Consumer Protection Week &Raquo; 6A00E550081576883402B6852C66F2200D 320Wi

Things are busy, here in my corner of the USA. I’m behind in reporting on what’s happening for National Consumer Protection Week. A lot of my time has been taken up since the first of the year taking part in the Dean Ornish heart health program. It ends Wednesday. I’ll be reporting on its many benefits soon. Activities for National Consumer Protection Week Here are some activities the Federal Trade Commission if offering for the consumer week: Wednesday, March 8 (In-person event) 10am – 2 p.m. HAST: Visit the FTC table at the Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs NCPW Fair at... Continue Reading

Agencies Want To Hear From You About Bad Experiences With Tenant Background Checks &Raquo; 6A00E550081576883402B75173Deff200B Pi

Most landlords and property managers use tenant background checks to decide whether to rent to someone. Two federal agencies want to hear about your experiences with background checks used to screen tenants. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and Federal Trade Commission have received thousands of complaints about the background checks including people being rejected for housing because someone else’s negative information, such as a criminal record or eviction, incorrectly appeared in their report. Other complaints have reported it’s difficult to have tenant screening companies fix... Continue Reading

Presidents’ Day: A Celebration Of Democracy, A Day Off, Or Shopping? &Raquo; 6A00E550081576883402B751720C8D200B 320Wi

Presidents’ Day sort of sneaked up on me this year. At times in the past, I’ve written about Presidents’ Day as a time to appreciate our democracy and celebrate the many freedoms we have as a result. As thoughts of democracy come to mind, the war in Ukraine looms large. With President Biden traveling there for the first anniversary of the war, it makes one wonder about the senselessness of war, once again, and how long it will take for this one to end. A day off? Only 24 percent of civilian workers receive a paid holiday for Presidents’ Day. The United States is the only advanced economy... Continue Reading

Watch Out For Celebrity Endorsements &Raquo; 6A00E550081576883402B685290F8F200D 320Wi

Before you spend money on that “Shark-approved” miracle invention, weight loss product, or keto diet pill, make sure it’s really been featured on the “Shark Tank” program. Scammers are using fake “Shark Tank” celebrity testimonials and endorsements – along with fake photos and videos – to generate publicity and profits. Before you click and make a purchase, follow this advice from the Federal Trade Commission and check it out. Here’s what to do if you’re wondering whether something is Shark-approved: Approach celebrity testimonials with caution. Look for product reviews... Continue Reading
