1. Episode #14: Don't play it safe. Deborah Brown-Volkman 24:18

“Boys don’t cry.” Simon was taught that at an early age. As Simon grew older, there was an updated lesson, “Men don’t show their emotions.” The challenge is these lessons never worked for him. Simon believes he can cry if he wants to. And, so can other men.

Simon has lived with mental illness for most of his life. Depression, Anxiety, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), and Burnout. He has battled his way past mental illness and is in recovery. He learned (and teaches) that it’s OK to not be OK.

Simon started Mindful Men in 2021 to share his story and help normalize discussions around mental health. Mental health issues are higher for men because they have been taught to keep their emotions to themselves. Simon’s mission is to change that. His aim is to encourage boys and men to open up, get vulnerable and deal with the issues that are troubling them.
