Matt DuBois, PhD., NCSP is a licensed school psychologist and clinical psychologist currently working in the Public Schools of Brookline (MA) as the Assistant Director of Guidance, Clinical Services, and Social-Emotional Learning. In addition to his role in Brookline, Dr. DuBois is the President of Massachusetts School Psychologists Association (MSPA) and is currently an SEL Fellow with the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL). Dr. DuBois has published works in the Journal of School Psychology, School Psychology Review, and the School Psychology Communiqué. What is the most challenging Mental Health issue in school right now? This is a big question! Students are struggling to consistently attend and engage in school. We are addressing the mental health needs of students with a variety of prevention-based supports (e.g., explicit SEL instruction in the classroom) and small-group and individualized mental health interventions. We are continuing to help support staff without clinical training to support the mental health needs of students. The impact of belonging on student well-being; the role of school as a protective factor for students, Helping students, staff, and guardians understand the difference between experiencing normative levels of unpleasant feelings versus presenting with a mental health diagnosis; accurately understanding what positive , mental health means, the role that schools and guardians have in the development of strong social-emotional skills.
