Hiding and Unhiding with Ruth Rathblott
- Hiding and Unhiding with Ruth Rathblott NewsRadio 1450/1370 WKIP (WKIP-AM) 1:41:44
Born with a visible disability, hiding became a way of life for Ruth.
From a young age, Ruth grappled with the societal pressure to fit in and be “normal.” This pressure led her to hide her disability, both physically and emotionally, for over 25 years. She avoided situations where her difference might be noticed or questioned.
The turning point came when Ruth decided to stop hiding and embrace her difference. By confronting her fears and being open about her limb difference, Ruth found a new sense of freedom and authenticity. She began to speak out about her experiences, advocating for a broader definition of diversity that includes visible and invisible differences. Her struggle wasn’t just about dealing with a physical disability; it was about overcoming the internal battle of self-acceptance and the external challenges of a world that often fails to recognize and include those who are different.
