The Book Leads – Episode 34: Jason Merchey & Wisdom: A Very Valuable Virtue That Cannot Be Bought
For this episode, Jason walks me through his life’s curiosity, work, and writings as they pertain to Wisdom. From his decades of studying and appreciating the great philosophical thinkers, both those well- and lesser-known, Jason wants to bring Wisdom to the forefront, where it can achieve a new appreciation that would allow society to crawl out of the mire of confusion, tension, and discord that we’ve all been trapped in for years.
We tend to choose sides, pick argument points, and stick firmly to and defend what we feel. So much of what we fight about is driven – and hindered — by emotion. Wisdom can allow us to go a little past and rise above what we fear losing. It provides a clarity.
Some highlights we touch upon:
- “Freedom always entails a sense of responsibility.”
- How the conversation about wisdom can impact kids.
- Why we can’t have wisdom without compassion.
Mentioned or Applicable Books:
- Tuesdays With Morrie by Mitch Albom
- Man’s Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl
- Wisdom: From Philosophy to Neuroscience by Stephen S. Hall
The MAIN QUESTION that underlies my conversation with Jason is, What does wisdom look like to you, and where do you seek it in your life?
