The Book Leads – Episode 32: Carrie-Lynn Hotson & Knowing Who You Lead: Important Lessons On Why We Need To Understand Those We Lead
For this episode, Carrie-Lynn walks me through her book, one built on her life and career, from her time as a police officer to her work in human resources. Those experiences (along with those found living on a farm) lead her to launch her businesses to help others through leadership Coaching and facilitation and ultimately culminated in her book.
It’s important to know who you lead. It sounds like common sense, right? Unfortunately, common sense is usually uncommon practice, and too many leaders only think about what they want to share and communicate without giving any thought to those they’re trying to lead. They’re constantly giving without understanding.
Some highlights we touch upon:
- A lesson Carrie-Lynn learned as a child involving a penny is what laid the foundation for the work she does today.
- There is an interconnectivity to everything, as evidenced by the lessons she’s able to draw from farming into her work and business.
- “What is perfectionism? Not wanting to be vulnerable”
Mentioned or Applicable Books:
- A Culture of Safety by Alla Weinberg
- Leadership Is Language by L. David Marquet
- The Thin Book of Trust: An Essential Primer for Building Trust At Work by Charles Feltman
- Extreme Ownership: How U.S. Navy SEALS Lead & Win by Jocko Willink & Leif Babin
The MAIN QUESTION that underlies my conversation with Carrie-Lynn is, Do you REALLY know and understand those you lead or even seek to influence?
