1. #167: Mary Beth O’Connor: “Junkie to Judge: One Woman's Triumph Over Trauma and Addiction” Jackson Huff 49:11

From junkie to judge is quite the phrase and my guest this week Mary Beth O’Connor has certainly lived quite the life. We start with being left at a nunnery as an infant, being pick back up 6 months later by a preoccupied mother, to then deal with an abusive stepfather throughout her childhood. Like to many troubled teens Mary Beth turned to drugs and alcohol to lessen the burden of home. This addiction was one that she fell deeper and deeper into throughout her teens and twenties where at 32 she decided it was time to get sober. After that we go on a journey of taking her own path in the recovery world and when she was on stable ground going to law school. She then later became a federal judge! This is quite a journey and one that we can all learn a lot from. Junkie to judge…sounds improbable, but that is Mary Beth O’Connor and nothing is impossible.

I am in admissions and advising by profession where I speak with students every day about their future and goals. I have spent a decade learning peoples life stories and what makes them tick. So, a few years ago I decided to take that passion for people and make a podcast. Through this I have been able to speak with a lot of amazing people. People like Bob Eubanks (The Newlywed Game), Daphne Maxwell Reid (Fresh Prince of Bel-Air), Maddie Musselman (2x Olympic Gold Medalist), Francois Clemmons (Mister Rogers' Neighborhood), and countless others.
