  1. From Ash To Ashes with Krishma Arora Emily Thiroux Threatt 26:30

The difference between how cultures navigate loss, Grief, and even happiness is a testament to the human condition’s oneness, and we can certainly learn a lot from that.

In this episode, I’m joined by Krishma Arora, Poet, Writer, and Public Speaker. Krishma emigrated from India when she was 5, lived in Long Island, and studied at NYU, where she got an MS in Education and an MS in Marketing. “From Ash To Ashes,” her first novel, tells a story inspired by the death of her first child and explores cultural oppression of women, discrimination, interfaith relationships, and sexual orientation, among many other sensitive topics.

We had a fantastic conversation about some of the Indian traditions represented in Krishma’s novel and how they influence people’s views on death, marriage, and romantic relationships. We also learn about arranged marriages in India, how they used to work, and what they look like now.

In addition, Krishma talks about what inspired her to write her novel, how the writing process helped her deal with the Grief of a lost child, and so much more.

Listen to episode 134 of Grief and Happiness and dive into a different culture, a new way of seeing life, death, love, fear, and happiness.

In This Episode, You Will Learn:

  • About what inspired Krishma to write her novel (3:10)
  • Krishma explains the differences between Indian and American weddings (6:00)
  • Arranged marriages. What they used to look like, and how they work now (13:10)
  • Grief is experienced and expressed in many ways (17:10)
  • People can sympathize but rarely empathize with grievers (22:10)

Emily Thiroux Threatt Podcast Host, Facilitator, Author

Having gone through the experience of the deaths of so many loved ones, I have learned to face life with love, optimism, and joy.

I have kept journals and written to express myself most of my life which led me to a career of teaching writing and writing books. I naturally turned to writing to help deal with my grief, then I discovered I could use writing to help friends deal with grief, too.

In contemplating how I could best help the grieving people I was working with, my Ignite moment came when realized the importance of helping people understand the importance of happiness and how they could grieve and be happy at the same time.

To share my message, I host the Grief and Happiness podcast, I wrote the book Loving and Living Your Way Though Grief, I facilitate weekly meetings of the Grief and Happiness Alliance, I founded the Grief and Happiness nonprofit foundation, I publish a weekly newsletter and blog, and my new book, The Grief and Happiness Handbook is coming out soon.
