1. Episode 35 - Adam Kemper - And We Started a Journey Through What Was Hell Drew Deraney 31:11

This episode: And We Started a Journey Through What Was Hell.

Old Belief System (The One Given To Me) My dad worked for the same company his entire career, he actually worked for the same company his father worked for his entire career. There was a loyalty I grew up expecting and looking for. I went to start my career with this idea of you go to a company, you start at the bottom, and you do your loyalty thing and you just work hard you work your way up the corporate ladder of America. It was the 1950s through 70s model that I grew up thinking still existed. And that was a very straight line.

Caving In (The Defining Moment) My wife was pregnant with our second child. When my son was born, he had a lot of medical trouble. At 15 months my son was diagnosed with cancer. And we started a journey through what was hell. Within three months of his diagnosis, my wife and I found out she was pregnant. My health care benefits have never been more important to me. Then I was laid off from my Wall Street job. I realize my son doesn’t have chemo treatment covered by insurance. My wife doesn’t have a prenatal appointment covered by insurance. I went to work for another investment company. At which point I was told that I was given an option to be relocated to St. Louis, Missouri, or taking the check that was sitting in the envelope on the table.

Coping (Managing Expectations) And then about six months I started going to job fairs. And this guy leaned over the barrier. And he started just talking. He says come in and meet with me. We have this meeting that ends up taking me to lunch and we probably spent two hours just talking about who I was. As a father. What my son had gone through. He’s a dad, he has kids and one of his kids has some challenges too.

Crushing It (The Turnaround) To learn how Adam found his value and worth, stood his ground and navigated this circuitous journey we call life, you’ll need to listen to the entire episode.
