1. Best Practices With Essential Oils in Dementia Care Alzheimer's Caregivers 58:27

Using natural remedies has been my preferred method of health care whenever possible. My dad spent the last decade of his life on many prescription drugs, which caused numerous unpleasant side effects. They added more to address the latest side effects instead of reducing the number of drugs he was on. After Moving Mom to memory care, my sister wanted to diffuse essential oils in her room, but it wasn’t practical since we were not there every day.

In this episode, I talk with a past guest, Dr. Jennifer Stelter, about essential oils in dementia care. You may remember Dr. Stelter from A Busy Caregivers Guide to Advanced Dementia episodes.

Essential oils aren’t a new fad. The origins of aromatherapy can be traced back thousands of years, giving us lots of evidence of its effectiveness. Many studies have shown the positive benefits for people with dementia when employing a quality aromatherapy routine. After our discussion, you’ll be confident to choose the aromatherapy methods that best benefit your household.

After helping care for her grandmother who had vascular dementia, Jennifer realized her Mother was showing signs of early onset Alzheimer’s. After the death of her father in 2017 Jennifer went searching for answers to many of the common questions and Alzheimer’s caregiver faces. Being a busy entrepreneur Jennifer realized that a podcast would be the easiest way to learn more about caregiving while completing other tasks.

Sadly, in late 2017 she only found one and it didn’t quite address what she was looking for, so she did the next best thing, and started her own. The Fading Memories podcast is now in it’s fourth year and despite the death of her Mom in March 2020, Jennifer is still talking to caregivers and still learning how to be an excellent caregiver. On the podcast she discusses caregiving, brain health, self-care and how to age well.
