1. Ep. 49: Mark Palm, Samaritan Aviation Kate Cherichello 33:44

Have you ever put much thought into how you get from place to place each day?

Hop in a car, Walk to a subway, Call up a friend for a ride, etc. What if a canoe or walking were your only ways of travel? How far could you walk each day to find supplies you need? Nope, no deli on the corner in Papua New Guinea, where this week’s guest on Be The Good with Kate helps hundreds of thousands of their remote residents. Until Mark Palm and Samaritan Aviation came to the island, getting to the only hospital took days. It had one of the highest maternal death rates in the Pacific. Cholera and other diseases spread quickly. Medical supplies often took six months to arrive.

This episode certainly puts in perspective the gifts we have, and how fortunate we are in so many ways.

With the focus of loving our neighbors as ourselves as SA’s cornerstone, Mark and his team brought seaplanes to the island of Papua New Guinea. Such a specific need, such an immense life-saving addition to the people there.

Six months down to one hour for delivery of medical supplies, A three day canoe ride down to a few hours to get to a hospital. Major disease outbreaks stopped in their tracks. Medical training for community members.

Talk about something else to wrap your head around: This isn’t a story about a man operating a nonprofit miles away from the comfort of a stateside office. Not at all. Mark, his wife, and their children moved to Papua New Guinea to start this mission. Mark highlights how it is the full family working together for this calling. They stayed for five years, each one helping in some way, and now families who are called to this work as well move to the island for two years at a time to directly serve the people there. Mark goes back and forth, as well as travels America sharing the story of Samaritan Aviation to others who may want to be involved in some way.

An incredible story that challenges us to ask the question, “What if we could…” and then see what happens when we put the wheels (planes?) into motion and keep the faith.
