Working in healthcare can often be highly stressful and relentless. The nature of the profession demands constant support and assistance, leading to high Burnout rates. It’s crucial to recognize that self-care is not a luxury but a necessity for healthcare workers. Your physical and mental well-being is a priority, and taking care of yourself is a vital part of your role, a testament to how much you are valued and prioritized in the healthcare system.

But just because you have a high-pressure job doesn’t mean you cannot do anything to help you overcome the challenges of being a healthcare worker and give yourself the care and support you need to deliver the care and support required by those you help every day, whether you’re a doctor, nurse, receptionist, phlebotomist, therapist, or another role within the industry.

Exercise

Some healthcare roles naturally involve a lot of movement and activity. While adding more Exercise to your routine may seem challenging, doing so can provide your body with the support it needs. Regular exercise can boost your mobility, stamina, strength, and heart health, all of which are crucial for managing the physical demands of your job.

It is recommended to get at least 150 minutes of physical activity per week that elevates your heart rate and makes you slightly out of breath. Remember, it doesn’t need to be all at once; it can be in 10-minute pockets scattered over the week. This flexibility empowers you to choose what works best for you, whether it’s a gym session, a run, a dance class, cycling, or swimming. What matters is that you take control of your well-being and do something.

Stress Release

Having an outlet to relieve your stress and get emotions and thoughts out of your head is vital for improved Mental Health. As a healthcare professional, you may be subject to increased Stress levels, and it’s important to find the right stress release or outlet for your emotions. Whether it’s talking to family or friends, visiting a therapist, using exercise, writing in a journal, or finding a way of expressing yourself, know that you are not alone. Your mental health is important, and finding the right outlet is a sign of strength and self-care, a testament to how much you are supported and understood in the healthcare community.

Dress Well

Your workplace likely has a dress code that you need to adhere to. However, finding comfortable clothing and footwear within these regulations can make you feel more comfortable during your working day and reduce psychological stress from poor-fitting footwear or apparel.

Choose lightweight, breathable scrubs that are stretchy and made from breathable fabrics to allow you to go about your day. Top scrubs can enable you to work comfortably in an outfit designed to support your activities and body, giving you one less thing to worry about.

Eat Well and Stay Hydrated

Fuelling your body correctly and staying hydrated can ensure your body has everything it needs to keep you going through long, hard days. While this is likely easier said than done, providing at least one meal packed with whole, nutritious foods to give your body the necessary nutrients can help you support your internal functions and satiate your hunger. Aim for a high-protein Diet that can keep you full for longer and include carbohydrates to give you energy throughout the day.
