Your Thinking Precedes Your Feelings
October 30th, 2023

Over the past half-century, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) has emerged as the most widely used approach to psychotherapy.  There are a few variations of it – with each tracing its lineage to a practitioner who was likely influenced by Albert Ellis or Aaron Beck – or both. The big reasons for its popularity include the relatively short time that it takes to achieve behavioral change and the fact that is a strong body of research that documents its effectiveness.  It has been efficacious in the treatment of depression, anxiety, pain, and substance abuse as well as a variety... Continue Reading

When Did Compromising Go Out of Fashion?
October 9th, 2023

As I write this blog, terrible wars are going on in Ukraine and the Middle East, virtually every country has enemies that with whom they have no diplomatic relations, politics are more polarized than ever, and even the party that has the majority in the House of Representatives hasn’t been able to agree on a speaker.  Even on the streets of our cities, an argument or a failure to yield the right of way in traffic can lead to violence.  Under these circumstances, it’s reasonable to ask, “What ever happened to the idea of compromise.” I’m not the kind of old guy who says that... Continue Reading

According to the United States Census, 1 in 6 people in the United States are 65 and older. That compares to 1 in 20, a hundred years ago back in 1920. Social Security benefits are received by 48.6 million Americans. 10,000 Baby Boomers are turning 65 each day. Are Your Relationships Reciprocal?
September 18th, 2023

Do you find that some of your friendships “feel” more right than others?  Do you feel like you are being used – or maybe you are the user?  Do either you or your partner have to be more flexible or tolerant than the other for the relationship to continue? No relationship goes smoothly all the time, but the best relationships allow for this, and people make adjustments to get things back on track.  In some relationships, however, there is an undercurrent of inequality that I’ve never found to be healthy.  Whether it’s a romantic relationship or a friendship, if one of the... Continue Reading

Overcoming Inertia
September 11th, 2023

We all have experienced it.  There comes a time when there is a break of several days in our schedule – either because of vacation, illness, a family emergency, a conference, or an intense project at work.  Whatever it is, it has the effect of derailing us from our normal routine.  During that time, even though it may be for a very good reason, we stop prioritizing some of our healthy habits – whether it be exercising or managing our diet or reading for pleasure or any of a number of other things that we are committed to doing. Under those circumstances, inertia takes over. ... Continue Reading

There I was…on a bus, halfway to Boston’s Logan Airport when I discovered I didn’t have my phone. Panic! I was going to be gone for two weeks and needed to communicate with people.
